South African brothers Luke and Mike Bell set the record in Cape Town on 11 December 2025 with a custom-built Peregreen V4. That makes “408 mph drone” a real record—but not a speed rating for ordinary consumer drones.
How fast is the world’s fastest drone?
Guinness World Records lists the fastest ground speed by a battery-powered remote-controlled (RC) quadcopter as 657.59 km/h (408.60 mph). Luke Bell and Mike Bell achieved it in Cape Town, South Africa, on 11 December 2025, flying their custom Peregreen V4. The headline’s 408 mph is a rounded version of the official figure. Guinness World Records’ listing specifies both the category and that the measured quantity is ground speed.
What does “world’s fastest drone” mean?
It is shorthand for a particular record category, not a universal title covering every kind of drone. Guinness has a separate fastest RC micro-drone quadcopter category. That listing gives a speed of 500.01 km/h (310.6 mph), achieved on 3 September 2026. It is a different class from the battery-powered RC quadcopter category held by the Peregreen V4. The micro-drone record listing identifies its category and result.
Is the 408-mph drone real, and can you buy one?
Yes: the Guinness listing certifies the result, achieved by a purpose-built aircraft. But the Peregreen V4 is not presented in the cited record or engineering accounts as a retail camera drone. Its performance belongs to a specialized speed-run build; the available sources do not establish that a consumer can buy a Peregreen V4 or that any off-the-shelf kit or component can reproduce its speed.

How was the Peregreen V4 engineered for speed?
According to AirShaper’s Peregreen V4 project case study, the Bells used aerodynamic simulation during the design process and built a body from 3D-printed carbon-fiber nylon (PA6-CF). Luke Maximo Bell told AirShaper that the team used its simulation service throughout design to reduce drag. This is the service provider’s account of its role in the project; Guinness remains the source for the certified record result.
AirShaper reports a rounded official average of 657 km/h (408 mph) and a 659 km/h peak. Those project-case-study figures are less precise than Guinness’s official 657.59 km/h record figure. The Bells’ earlier Peregreen 2 project also illustrates the iterative nature of the work: Guinness described a custom quadcopter with a purpose-built aerodynamic shell and propulsion. Guinness’s account of Peregreen 2 provides that historical context.

How does the reported Blackbird speed compare?
A May 2026 TechSpot report described a Blackbird test reaching 730 km/h (about 453.6 mph) on a single downwind run, with a 685 km/h (425.6 mph) two-way average. The report said Guinness had not certified the attempt at the time it was published. TechSpot’s report therefore documents a later reported test, not a replacement for the certified Guinness record on that evidence alone.

These figures are not directly interchangeable: the Peregreen number is a certified ground-speed record, while the Blackbird report distinguishes a downwind single-run result from a two-way average. Certification status and measurement method matter as much as the headline speed.
