Some YouTube viewers have reported unusually long, unskippable ad breaks, including TV screens showing 90-second countdowns. But YouTube says it does not have a 90-second non-skippable ad format: in April 2026, it attributed those timers to a bug that showed inaccurate times for shorter ads and said a fix was rolling out. A long countdown, a sequence of ads, and the duration of one ad are not necessarily the same thing.

What YouTube says its ad formats are

YouTube’s Help page lists four formats viewers may encounter. The maximum for a non-skippable ad depends on regional standards and device: 15 or 20 seconds, or up to 30 seconds on TVs. These are the platform’s documented formats; they do not establish that every reported long ad is a new format.

Format What viewers can expect
Skippable video ad Can be skipped after five seconds.
Non-skippable video ad Listed as 15 or 20 seconds depending on regional standards; up to 30 seconds on TVs.
Bumper ad Non-skippable and up to six seconds.
Ad pod Two video ads can play back to back during a long-form video of at least five minutes.

YouTube says ads can appear before, during, or after videos. For new long-form videos, it automatically shows pre-roll, post-roll, skippable, or non-skippable ads when appropriate. Creators can turn on mid-roll ads for videos longer than eight minutes. These placement options explain where breaks may occur, not how long every individual ad will be.

Why a 90-second countdown may not mean one 90-second ad

YouTube attributed the 2026 TV reports to a timer bug

In April 2026, viewers reported 90-second timers during TV ad breaks. YouTube told 9to5Google that the timers were inaccurate displays for shorter ads, said it had no 90-second non-skippable ad format, and said a fix was rolling out. The reports describe what some viewers saw on screen; they are not evidence that YouTube introduced a 90-second ad. Read 9to5Google’s April 10, 2026 report.

A break can contain more than one ad

An on-screen break may include two back-to-back ads, which YouTube calls an ad pod. That is different from one ad running for the entire break. To make sense of a long wait, note whether the screen shows one ad or a sequence, whether the countdown changes, and whether you are watching in the TV app, a browser, or another device. YouTube documents ad pods, but that alone cannot identify what happened in a particular viewer’s session.

Why TV ad breaks can differ from other devices

Google announced 30-second non-skippable ads for connected TVs in 2023. In the same company post, it described evaluating fewer, longer ad breaks and testing clearer displays of remaining break time. Those statements provide historical context for a TV experience that can differ from mobile or computer viewing; they do not show that every announced experiment is still active.

Google also reported that 79% of surveyed U.S. viewers preferred ads grouped together rather than spread through long-form TV content. That was a company-reported Qualtrics survey of 312 adults in 2022, not a universal preference. The post also cited YouTube internal figures: 65% of U.S. connected-TV watch time in December 2022 was on content at least 21 minutes long, and more than 700 million hours of YouTube content were watched daily on TV screens in 2021. These dated figures explain the company’s TV focus, not the length of a particular ad break today. See Google’s September 6, 2023 announcement.

How common are reports of very long ads?

Long-ad complaints are real, but available reports do not show how often they occur among all YouTube viewers. In a January 2025 Android Authority reader poll with more than 8,600 votes, 31% of respondents said the longest unskippable ad they had encountered exceeded two minutes. The poll was self-selected: it cannot estimate the experience of all viewers, verify each response, or explain what caused an individual’s ad break. Treat it as a snapshot of respondents’ reports, not a platform-wide measurement. See Android Authority’s poll results.

What to do if you see an unusually long ad

  • Check the device. YouTube’s documented maximum differs for TVs, and the 2026 timer reports came from TV ad breaks.
  • Separate the ad from the break. A sequence of ads may take longer than one ad; YouTube says two can play back to back on eligible long-form videos.
  • Watch the countdown and ad transitions. Inaccurate timer displays were the explanation YouTube gave for the 90-second reports in April 2026.
  • Compare another viewing session or device. This may help identify whether the issue appears specific to one screen or session, though it cannot establish the cause.

If you want an ad-free viewing option, YouTube Premium is a paid service described as providing ad-free YouTube videos. Its price and availability depend on the country and may change; check YouTube’s current offer for your market. An overview published by Android Authority in March 2025 also listed background play, offline playback, and YouTube Music Premium among the benefits, but should not be used for current pricing.
