Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMost Streamlabs audio problems come down to a muted or incorrectly selected source, a mismatch between Streamlabs and your operating-system audio device, or the same sound being captured twice. Start in the Audio Mixer and follow the symptom-specific checks below before changing filters or buying equipment. Streamlabs OBS is now called Streamlabs Desktop in current support documentation.
Start with the Audio Mixer and device selection
- Open the Audio Mixer. Make sure the expected microphone or desktop-audio source is listed and not muted.
- Check for meter movement. Speak into the microphone or play the sound you want to capture. If the source meter does not move, troubleshoot that source or its selected device before adding more sources.
- Match the device in both places. Confirm the intended input or output is selected in Streamlabs Desktop and is the device currently in use by Windows or macOS.
- Test what viewers hear. Make a short recording or review a VOD; your headphone mix may not match the audio sent to viewers.
For basic setup, Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide: Setting Up Streamlabs Desktop for Streaming recommends matching Desktop Audio to the Windows default playback device.
Why is Streamlabs not capturing desktop audio on Windows?
Windows desktop audio can usually be captured directly. The first things to check are whether the correct playback device is selected and whether another audio utility is interfering.
- In the Audio Mixer, confirm Desktop Audio is present and unmuted.
- Match Desktop Audio to the Windows playback device you are actually using. If selecting “Default” does not work, manually choose the device by name.
- If needed, add an Audio Output Capture source and choose the playback device whose audio you want to capture.
- Close audio-management utilities such as Nahimic, Sonic Studio, Realtek HD Audio Manager, or Sound Blaster software, then test again. Streamlabs identifies these as possible conflicts.
- If audio still fails, open the playback device’s properties in Windows and try disabling Give exclusive mode applications priority.
Streamlabs lists reinstalling or installing C++ Redistributables as a later troubleshooting possibility, not the first step. Try the mixer, device, and utility checks before changing system components. See Streamlabs’ desktop-audio troubleshooting guide.

How do I capture desktop audio on macOS?
Streamlabs documents a virtual-driver workaround for capturing system audio on macOS. Its guide explains that macOS does not let apps such as Streamlabs Desktop capture audio directly from other apps in the same way as Windows. The workflow below routes system sound to both your local output and Streamlabs using the free BlackHole software.
- Install BlackHole, then open macOS Audio MIDI Setup.
- Create a Multi-Output Device that includes BlackHole and Built-in Output. Place Built-in Output above BlackHole in the device list so local monitoring continues.
- Set the Multi-Output Device as the macOS system output.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, select BlackHole as the Mic/Auxiliary input.
- Play audio and confirm the relevant Streamlabs meter moves. If needed, make a short recording to verify the routed sound reaches the capture.
For the documented workflow and details, follow Streamlabs’ Mac desktop-audio guide.
Why can’t viewers hear my microphone?
If the microphone meter does not move when you speak, select the intended Mic/Aux device in Settings > Audio, or add an Audio Input Capture source and select the microphone there. Check that the operating system is using the intended input and that the microphone is connected and powered. Then speak while watching the mixer and confirm the source is not muted.

Avoid adding several microphone sources as a first fix: overlapping inputs can make it harder to identify which device is active or create duplicate audio. Streamlabs’ microphone guide covers input selection and ways to improve mic quality.

How do I fix a quiet, noisy, clipped, or uneven microphone?
Set a usable input level
Speak at your normal streaming volume while watching the microphone meter. Streamlabs says mic peaks generally should reach the yellow area; peaks in red may sound distorted. Raise the level or gain only as much as needed, because extra gain can also make room and computer noise more noticeable. Keep game or desktop audio low enough that speech remains intelligible.
Adjust filters one at a time
Filters depend on the microphone, room, background noise, and speaking level, so there is no universal recipe. Add or adjust one filter at a time, then listen to a short recording before changing another:

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Noise suppression can reduce steady background sounds such as hum.
- Noise gate can reduce low-level sounds, such as keyboard noise, between speech.
- Compression can smooth differences between quieter and louder speech.
- Limiter can help prevent peaks from exceeding a chosen ceiling.

How do I stop audio echo or duplicate sound?
Look for two routes carrying the same audio into Streamlabs. If you use Application Audio Capture for a game or app, disable the general Desktop Audio source if it is also capturing that sound. Streamlabs explains this in its guide to splitting audio in Streamlabs Desktop.
For a capture card, check whether you hear its audio both directly from the device and through Streamlabs monitoring. Streamlabs warns that the Monitor and Output mode may cause echo; review the capture-card source’s monitoring mode and test with only one listening route active. Headphones can prevent speakers from feeding sound back into the microphone. Streamlabs’ advice is straightforward: “Always wear headphones to avoid echo and feedback.” See its capture-card troubleshooting guide.

When should I use application capture or advanced audio routing?
Use the simplest setup that meets your goal. Desktop Audio captures general system sound; Application Audio Capture lets you select a window. Streamlabs also documents selective recording, which can determine which sources go to the stream, recording, or both. For more complex Windows routing, it describes VB-Audio Virtual Cable and VoiceMeeter Banana. These tools add routing choices but also add setup complexity, so first confirm the mixer and device settings are correct.
If you use an XLR microphone, the setup may require an audio interface or mixer. That is a connection requirement for some XLR configurations, not a general remedy for a muted source, wrong input, duplicate capture, or routing issue.
Why is Streamlabs audio cutting out on macOS?
As of October 6, 2026, Streamlabs’ support article for audio cutting out or becoming choppy on macOS reports an investigation affecting Streamlabs Desktop 1.19.4. It says some users report that disabling audio monitoring resolves the problem; this is a user-reported workaround, not a confirmed fix for every system.

Check your Streamlabs Desktop version and the article’s current status. If your setup is affected, you can try toggling audio monitoring off and then restoring the mode you want, or leave monitoring off if that is workable for you. The status and workaround are described in Streamlabs’ macOS choppy-audio status article.
Will a new microphone fix the problem?
Consider a different microphone only if the existing mic itself is unsuitable for your needs—for example, if it consistently sounds thin or picks up too much background noise. A USB microphone for streaming is one possible upgrade, but new hardware will not correct a muted mixer source, an incorrect input selection, duplicate captures, or macOS desktop-audio routing. Streamlabs discusses microphone options and setup considerations in its mic-quality guide.
