The A19 Pro is quick in both iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air, but the phones do not have identical graphics hardware. Later comparative tests found their CPU scores and a short video transcode close, while the Pro pulled further ahead in a graphics stress test. Early Geekbench results suggested gains over A18 Pro, but those were explicitly unconfirmed submissions—not a controlled verdict on everyday speed.
What the early A19 Pro benchmarks showed
On September 10, 2025, MacRumors reported early Geekbench 6 database entries for A19 Pro and described them as unconfirmed. Those submissions suggested 13–15% higher multi-core CPU performance than A18 Pro. An early Metal result suggested up to 40% better graphics performance for the iPhone 17 Pro’s six-core GPU; an early result for the Air’s five-core GPU suggested about 15% improvement. These are preliminary estimates from database entries, not guaranteed gains for every device or workload. MacRumors’ September 10, 2025 report also cautioned that benchmark scores and real-world performance are not completely analogous.
Is iPhone Air as fast as iPhone 17 Pro?
It depends on the task. In a later comparison of the iPhone 17 lineup, Tom’s Guide recorded fairly close Geekbench 6 CPU scores and nearly identical times for a short Premiere Rush transcode. Its 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited results showed a much larger gap in graphics performance:
| Test | iPhone Air | iPhone 17 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 3,723 | 3,834 |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 9,665 | 9,988 |
| 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited | 29.5 fps | 46.4 fps |
| Adobe Premiere Rush transcode | 23 seconds | 22 seconds |
These are Tom’s Guide’s results for its tested devices and conditions, not universal rankings or the original 2025 database scores. They illustrate why one CPU score cannot settle which phone is “faster”: the phones were close in these CPU and short-transcode tests, but the Pro led substantially in this graphics test. Why the Pro scores higher in graphics tests
The configurations differ. Apple specifies a six-core CPU and five-core GPU for the A19 Pro in iPhone Air; the original MacRumors report identifies a six-core GPU in iPhone 17 Pro. Apple says each Air GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator, but that does not make its GPU the same configuration as the Pro’s.
GPU core count is relevant context for the Solar Bay gap, but it is not a complete explanation of performance: benchmark results also depend on the workload and the phone’s ability to sustain performance. The Air’s thin, light design is part of the product trade-off, while the Pro adds a vapor chamber cooling system.

What Apple’s sustained-performance claim means
Apple said that, when paired with its vapor chamber, A19 Pro lets iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max deliver “up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the previous generation.” This is Apple’s claim about Pro models versus the previous generation—not a direct Pro-versus-Air test. The quoted statement does not specify whether the percentage refers to CPU, GPU, or another performance metric, so it should not be treated as a measured 40% advantage for every task. Apple’s iPhone Air announcement describes the Air’s chip configuration; the sustained-performance statement was made in Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro announcement and quoted by MacRumors.

Geekbench Browser’s device charts are built from user-submitted Geekbench 6 results. Their aggregates can change as submissions arrive and are not equivalent to a single controlled lab comparison. When comparing results, check the benchmark version, whether the figure is single-core or multi-core, the device configuration, and whether the number comes from an early entry, a live aggregate, or a named publication’s test. Geekbench 6 scores should not be blended with scores from another Geekbench version as if they were directly equivalent. Geekbench Browser’s iOS charts provide the context for its user-submitted results.

Which phone’s performance matters for your use?
- Everyday CPU-heavy tasks: The cited Tom’s Guide CPU scores are close, so those figures alone do not show a dramatic difference between the tested phones.
- Graphics-intensive games or workloads: The Pro’s six-core GPU and its much higher Solar Bay result make it the stronger performer in that particular graphics test.
- Long, demanding workloads: The Pro has a vapor chamber, and Apple makes a sustained-performance claim for it versus the previous generation. The cited claim does not establish a controlled sustained-performance comparison with Air.
- Short video export: Tom’s Guide’s Premiere Rush times were close in its test, but one short transcode does not predict every editing workflow.
