Each can use a different volume control or audio route. Check the relevant settings and connections, then inspect the speaker or receiver opening; if speaker problems persist, Apple recommends getting service.
First, identify which iPhone sound is quiet
Compare a song or video, a ringtone or alert, a call through the receiver, speakerphone, and headphones. A problem limited to one of these points you toward different controls; it does not by itself identify a failed component.
- Media: Play audio, then use the side buttons to adjust its volume.
- Ringer and alerts: When media is not playing, the side buttons adjust ringer and alert volume. You can also check the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings > Sounds or Sounds & Haptics.
- Calls: Adjust the volume with the side buttons while a call is active.
- Headphones: Test them separately from the built-in speaker; headphone safety settings may limit their audio.
Apple explains that the side buttons adjust media during playback and ringer and alert volume at other times. Apple’s iPhone sound settings guidance describes the available controls.
If alerts are quiet but media and calls are normal
Check Attention Aware Features
On a supported Face ID iPhone, Attention Aware features can lower alert volume when the phone detects that you are looking at it. Check Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features. This behavior concerns alerts; it is not a general control for quiet music, video, or calls. Apple’s Attention Aware documentation explains the feature.

Check alert settings
Open Settings > Sounds or Sounds & Haptics and review the Ringtone and Alerts slider. Also check whether Silent mode or Do Not Disturb is affecting what you hear. Apple includes these checks in its sound and speaker troubleshooting steps.
If headphones suddenly sound too quiet
Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety and review Reduce Loud Audio. When enabled, this setting reduces headphone audio above the selected decibel limit. It affects headphone output, not the iPhone’s built-in speaker. Availability of headphone notifications, including whether they can be turned off, can vary by region.

Apple gives over 80 decibels (dB) for 40 hours total within the last seven days as an example exposure threshold in its headphone safety guidance. That example describes headphone exposure notifications; it is not a diagnostic threshold for a quiet iPhone. See Apple’s headphone safety guidance.
If calls alone are quiet
Raise the volume during the call
Use the side buttons while the call is active. Changing the volume outside a call may adjust ringer or media instead.

Check where the call is playing
A phone or FaceTime call can be routed to the iPhone, a Bluetooth headset, or a hearing device. During the call, check its audio destination and select the intended output. You can also review Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing. Apple documents the available call audio routes in its call audio routing guidance.

Remove anything covering the openings
Take off the case or screen film temporarily and inspect the speaker and receiver openings for dirt or blockage. A covering or obstruction can affect sound from the opening it covers.

Clean carefully if needed
Apple’s instruction is: “If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure the brush is clean and dry.” Avoid introducing moisture or using a tool that could damage the opening. Apple’s speaker troubleshooting guidance provides the cleaning recommendation.
Test the speaker and seek service if the problem remains
Move the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings > Sounds or Sounds & Haptics to test the built-in speaker. Apple says that if there is no sound, or the speaker control is dimmed, the speaker may need service. If the problem continues after the checks above, Apple advises getting service. The symptom alone does not establish which part, if any, has failed.
