To install Windows 11 version 25H2, open Settings > Windows Update and choose Download and install if the update is offered. If it is not there, your PC may not yet be included in Microsoft’s staged rollout or may be subject to a compatibility safeguard. You can postpone the restart when prompted, but if your PC runs Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro, plan to move before that version’s updates end on October 13, 2026.
Check whether Windows 11 25H2 is offered
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- If you see Download and install for Windows 11, version 25H2, select it and follow the prompts. You can choose when to restart or postpone the update.
Microsoft said 25H2 was available for all eligible devices as of May 15, 2026, but availability does not mean every PC receives the offer simultaneously. Windows Update uses an intelligent rollout, and compatibility checks can affect when an individual device is offered the update. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 25H2 release-health page for current issues and safeguard holds that could apply to your device.
If 25H2 is not offered
Give the staged rollout time
If Windows Update does not show 25H2, that alone does not mean your PC cannot run it. Microsoft distributes the update to eligible unmanaged Home and Pro devices as they are ready, rather than promising a single offer date for every device. Check the release-health page for known issues or a safeguard hold before trying another route.
Consider the Update Assistant only after checking its target
Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant can manually install the latest feature update on a compatible PC, including when the automatic offer has not arrived. Its support page describes the latest feature update generally, so first confirm that the Assistant’s current download is specifically Windows 11 25H2. What the 24H2-to-25H2 enablement update does
For PCs already running Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft says 24H2 and 25H2 share a common core operating system and have identical system files. Most 25H2 files are already present through 24H2 monthly updates; the enablement package activates the 25H2 features. Microsoft describes it as a “small, quick-to-install switch.” The 24H2-to-25H2 transition uses one restart.
This description applies to the transition from 24H2. It does not establish that every upgrade path or device will have the same download size or installation experience.

How to decide whether to install now or delay

Windows Update lets consumers choose when to restart or postpone an offered update. The available evidence does not establish a current pause duration or a complete pause-settings sequence, so check Microsoft’s current Windows Update instructions rather than relying on an assumed number of pause days.
Why a safeguard hold can block the offer
Microsoft may temporarily withhold 25H2 from devices with a known compatibility problem. Safeguard holds are renewed as fixes are issued and verified. Disabling safeguards can expose a PC to known performance issues and does not guarantee a successful update. For a personal PC, treat a missing offer as a reason to check for a hold, not as a prompt to force the installation. Microsoft’s release-health page lists current status information.

What IT administrators should know
Organizations can deploy 25H2 through Windows Update client policies, WSUS (including Configuration Manager), or the Microsoft 365 admin center. Intune feature-update policies let administrators select a Windows version, assign devices, and configure rollout behavior. Microsoft documents the deployment options in its Windows 11 version 25H2 enablement package guidance and Intune feature updates guidance.
- Optional update: the user must choose to install it.
- Required update: it installs according to device settings.
- Staged rollout: administrators can target device groups and manage availability, but the exact installation time also depends on user behavior, deadlines, and restart controls.
Before broad deployment, administrators should account for device-group scope, user readiness, restart scheduling, and any applicable safeguard status. Microsoft identifies 24 months of servicing for Windows 11 Pro and 36 months for Windows 11 Enterprise from release in its 2025 Windows 11 release documentation.

These dates are from Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 update notice. They make indefinite postponement a poor plan for 24H2 Home and Pro users: choose a supported upgrade path and allow time to address any compatibility hold.
