If one earbud will not charge in its case, first make sure the case has power, then reseat the earbud and check both sets of charging contacts for debris. Confirm whether the case or companion app recognizes it before following the restart or reset steps for your exact model. If those checks do not help, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Work through these checks in order

Make sure the charging case has power
Connect the case to a known-working power source with a working cable, then check whether its indicator responds. A case without power cannot charge either earbud, even if only one side appears affected.
For AirPods and AirPods Pro, Apple recommends leaving the earbuds in the case, with the lid closed and the case connected to power, for at least 15 minutes when they will not charge. For a Qi wireless charging case, Apple advises placing the status light facing up and repositioning the case if the light does not turn on. These instructions apply to the cited Apple case types; other cases may behave differently.

Reseat the earbud in its matching slot
Remove the affected earbud and put it back into its corresponding slot. Check that it is oriented correctly and sits fully down. Incorrect placement can stop the earbud from making contact with the case: Samsung identifies poor positioning as a possible cause, and Sony gives incorrect insertion as a possible reason an earpiece will not charge.

Inspect and clean the charging contacts
Look for lint, earwax, or other visible debris on the earbud’s charging contacts and the corresponding pins or contact surfaces inside the case. Debris can interrupt the connection; Samsung and Sony both advise checking or cleaning the terminals.
Follow the cleaning directions for your exact model. Do not scrape the contacts or put liquid into the case. For the Sony WF-1000XM4 specifically, Sony warns against compressed air, which can push dust into openings. Do not assume that a cleaning method for one model is suitable for another.

Check whether the earbud is recognized
Look at the case indicator and, if available for your model, the phone’s battery widget, device settings, or the manufacturer’s companion app. These can help show whether the earbud is detected and whether it is charging. Apple explains how to check AirPods charge status, while Samsung describes checking Galaxy Buds charging status.
Indicator lights differ by model, so do not apply one brand’s color meanings to another case. If the case does not recognize the affected earbud after it is seated and the contacts are clean, note that result before continuing.

Restart or reset using the model’s instructions
Only after checking case power, seating, and contacts, follow the official restart or reset steps for your exact earbuds. The procedure varies by model and generation. Samsung provides a short in-case restart procedure for Galaxy Buds, but its timing and interface details are not universal across the family.
Apple recommends resetting AirPods when an AirPod still is not working; Apple notes that resetting also clears custom settings. Check the manufacturer’s instructions before proceeding so you know what settings may be lost.

Contact support if charging still fails
If the model-specific troubleshooting does not resolve the problem, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. A damaged contact, failed battery, or other internal fault is possible, but charging symptoms alone do not establish which component has failed. Samsung says service is required if its troubleshooting does not fix a Galaxy Buds charging issue and there is no visible damage to the earbuds, charger, or adapter.
Warranty coverage, repairability, available replacement parts, and service prices depend on the product and region. Confirm those details with the manufacturer before deciding whether to repair or replace the earbuds.

What the symptoms can tell you

These are troubleshooting clues, not a remote diagnosis. A model’s indicator or app may show different information, and no single light pattern applies to all earbuds.
