Choose wireless transfer, connect the phones with a compatible USB cable, or back up the old phone to a computer and restore it. Smart Switch can move many common types of content, but it may not copy every item: support varies by device, and synced account data or private app data may need separate attention.
Before you start
- Make sure Smart Switch is available on both phones. The exact labels and menus can vary by model and software version.
- Keep both phones nearby and, if practical, connected to chargers.
- Do not erase or trade in the old phone until you have checked the important data on the new one.
On some Galaxy phones, you can open the transfer flow through Settings → Accounts and backup → Transfer data for device setup. Otherwise, open Smart Switch directly. Samsung’s Caribbean instructions, updated July 23, 2026, describe that Settings route; follow the labels actually shown on your phones. Samsung’s Smart Switch setup guide.
Transfer wirelessly between Galaxy phones
- Open Smart Switch on both phones. On the old phone, tap Send from this phone; on the new phone, tap Receive on this phone.
- On the new phone, choose Galaxy/Android as the source type. Select Wireless on both devices.
- Keep the phones close and follow the prompts to connect them. Samsung’s U.S. instructions for this wireless flow say to place the devices within four inches. Allow the connection on the old phone when prompted.
- Let Smart Switch scan the old phone. Choose Everything, a limited set of content, or Custom, depending on the options shown.
- Start the transfer and wait for Smart Switch to finish. Keep the phones near one another and connected to power if possible.
Wireless transfer avoids needing a cable and is convenient if you want to keep both phones charging. Samsung describes it as a preferred option in its guidance, but does not establish that it is fastest for every phone pairing or transfer size. Transfer with a USB cable
- Check the ports on both phones and connect them with a compatible USB cable. Some combinations need an adapter, such as a USB-C OTG adapter; the required connection depends on the devices.
- Open Smart Switch. Tap Send from this phone on the old Galaxy and Receive on this phone on the new one.
- Choose the source type and the cable connection when prompted. Allow the connection on the old phone.
- Select the content to move, then start the transfer. For the wired flow described in its U.S. guide, Samsung recommends that both devices have at least 20% charge.
- Leave the cable connected until the transfer is complete. Samsung cautions against disconnecting it during the transfer.
A cable is useful if you already have a compatible one or prefer a direct connection; an adapter is not required for every pairing. Samsung’s transfer screen may offer Everything, a limited group of accounts, calls, contacts and messages, or Custom, depending on the phones. Samsung’s U.S. Smart Switch guide.

Back up to a computer, then restore to the new Galaxy
- Install the Smart Switch desktop app on a supported Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the old Galaxy to the computer and use Smart Switch to create a backup.
- Connect the new Galaxy and use the app’s restore option to transfer the backup.
- Follow the app’s prompts, then check the new phone for content that may require a separate account sign-in or transfer.
This route can help when a direct phone-to-phone connection is inconvenient, or when you want a computer backup as an intermediate step. Samsung’s U.S. desktop guide lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later for the Smart Switch version it describes; operating-system requirements can change, so check Samsung’s current download and support information before installing. What Smart Switch can transfer—and what to check separately
Samsung lists common transferable content including contacts, calendars or schedules, messages, memos, call logs, photos, videos, music, documents and apps. Support for some content depends on the source and destination devices. Certain settings, Home screen layout, Secure Folder content, Samsung Pass information and app data may be limited to Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfers or otherwise depend on the connected devices. Smart Switch does not necessarily copy everything associated with your accounts. Samsung says synced data may show up on the new phone after you sign in, while its computer-transfer guide excludes some account-synced contacts and calendar items as well as app data saved in private storage. Check the following on the new phone before wiping the old one:
- Photos, videos and documents you need
- Messages, contacts and calendars
- Access to authenticator apps and other important accounts
- Apps and any app-specific data or sign-in requirements
- Secure Folder or other protected content you rely on

Which transfer method should you use?

Samsung’s published instructions do not provide a controlled speed comparison across Galaxy models, transfer sizes and software versions, so no method can be called universally fastest based on those guides. Choose based on the connection and equipment you have available.
