Its listed 4K modes reach 30 Hz for 3840×2160, so the label alone does not establish 4K at 60 Hz. To know what will work, check the resolution, refresh rate, and features supported by every device in the connection, then choose a cable category suited to that signal.
What HDMI 1.4 means
HDMI 1.4 identifies a generation of the HDMI specification: the technical framework that defines signal formats and features devices may support. HDMI Licensing, LLC announced the specification on June 8, 2009, highlighting networking capability and Audio Return Channel (ARC) (official announcement).
A specification can define capabilities without requiring every product to implement every one. A television, player, receiver, soundbar, or cable listing that mentions HDMI 1.4 does not by itself prove that a particular feature works across the connection. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s current materials identify HDMI 2.2 as the latest specification, making 1.4 a historical version rather than a description of the latest HDMI capabilities (HDMI specification versions).
Can HDMI 1.4 do 4K?
Yes, but the listed HDMI 1.4b modes are limited to lower refresh rates than 4K at 60 Hz. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s overview lists 3840×2160 at 24, 25, or 30 Hz, and the cinema-oriented 4096×2160 format at 24 Hz. It also lists 1920×1080 at 120 Hz (HDMI 1.4b overview).
#1 Best Overall
- Reliable Performance: Supports Full HD 1920x1080 resolution with refresh rates of 144Hz, 100Hz, and 60Hz for smooth and vibrant visuals.
- Ethernet-Enabled: Built-in Ethernet support allows for device connectivity and network sharing through a single cable.
- Advanced Features: Includes HDCP compatibility to enable secure content playback without interruptions.
- Durable Build: HDMI Male to HDMI Male design with genuine components ensures consistent and high-quality performance across Sceptre monitors, TVs, gaming consoles, PCs, and laptops.
- Convenient Length: The 5ft (1.5m) cable length provides an optimal balance of flexibility and ease of setup for various use cases.
That means “HDMI 1.4” is not evidence of 4K60 support. If your goal is 4K at 60 Hz, verify that the source and display explicitly support that mode and that any receiver or soundbar between them can pass it through. A cable cannot make a device support a mode it lacks.
Which features did HDMI 1.4 introduce?
The HDMI 1.4 family added or specified several capabilities, but support depends on the implementation in the products being connected:

- Audio Return Channel (ARC): lets a compatible TV send audio upstream over HDMI to a compatible AV receiver or soundbar. Both ends need to support ARC, and the correct ports and settings may be required.
- HDMI Ethernet Channel: provides for networking over an HDMI connection when the connected devices implement it.
- 3D formats, content-type signaling, and additional color spaces: these are specification capabilities, not guarantees about every HDMI 1.4 product.
- Micro HDMI: a smaller connector option; its shape alone does not establish which signal modes a device supports.
- Automotive connection system: a connection option for automotive applications.
- USB Type-C HDMI Alt Mode: HDMI 1.4b is supported by HDMI Alt Mode for USB Type-C, allowing a compatible source to send native HDMI signals from USB-C to an HDMI display. Not every USB-C port supports video output; confirm the source’s capabilities (HDMI 1.4b overview).
Do you need an “HDMI 1.4 cable”?
Choose a cable by its official category and the signal your setup needs, rather than relying on a generic “HDMI 1.4 cable” description. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes a High Speed HDMI Cable as designed and tested for up to 10.2 Gbps, with support for 4K, 3D, and Deep Color; its guidance includes 4K at 30 Hz among supported modes (official cable guidance; High Speed HDMI Cable category).
Some High Speed cables may support additional features such as 4K60, but that capability should not be assumed from the category name alone. Check the cable’s labeling and product specifications for the exact mode required. A suitable High Speed HDMI cable can connect compatible equipment; it cannot add ARC, 4K60, or another feature that the connected devices do not support.

How to check whether your setup will work
- Write down the target mode. Specify the resolution and refresh rate, such as 3840×2160 at 30 Hz or 4K at 60 Hz, rather than relying on a broad “4K” label.
- Check the source and display. Look up the supported mode for the exact HDMI input and output being used; capabilities can differ between ports on the same product.
- Check every device in between. If the signal passes through an AVR or soundbar, confirm it supports the needed video mode. For ARC, confirm ARC support at both the TV and audio-device ends.
- Match the cable category and connector. Verify the cable’s stated or certified performance for the target signal and confirm the connector type fits both devices. Connector shape is not proof of video capability.
- For USB-C to HDMI, confirm video output support. A USB-C connector alone does not mean the source supports HDMI Alt Mode or video output.
