Update affected ASP.NET Core applications to the patched release for their .NET line, then restart them. If you use the affected standalone Kestrel package, update it to 2.3.6. Self-contained applications must also be rebuilt and redeployed. Microsoft classifies CVE-2025-55315 as an HTTP request/response smuggling vulnerability caused by inconsistent interpretation of HTTP requests. It says an authorized network attacker could exploit it to bypass a security feature, and reports no mitigating factors.

Which ASP.NET Core versions are affected?

Microsoft’s advisory identifies the following affected releases and fixes. The .NET 10 entry concerns release candidates, not a claim about a general-availability .NET 10 release.

Component or channel Affected versions Patched version listed by Microsoft
ASP.NET Core 10.0 release candidate 10.0.0-rc.1.25451.107 or earlier 10.0.0-rc.2 runtime packages; the affected-package table specifies 10.0.0-rc.2.25502.107
ASP.NET Core 9.0 9.0.9 or earlier 9.0.10
ASP.NET Core 8.0 8.0.20 or earlier 8.0.21
Microsoft.AspNetCore.Server.Kestrel.Core used with ASP.NET Core 2.x 2.3.0 or earlier 2.3.6

These versions and ranges are from Microsoft’s security advisory. For .NET 10, select the platform-specific patched runtime package identified in the advisory or official download entry rather than assuming one package version fits every platform.

How do I know if my application is affected?

Check both the runtime or SDK installed on the host and the Kestrel package used by the application. Microsoft’s advisory says a system may be affected if an affected runtime/SDK or affected package appears in its lists. Kestrel is ASP.NET Core’s cross-platform web server and is configured by default in ASP.NET Core project templates, so teams may use it without managing it as a separate product.

  • Less Freight: 2 Pcs makes the freight less for each product.

Check installed SDKs and runtimes

  1. On the application host, run dotnet --info to display installed SDK and runtime versions.
  2. Compare the output with the affected ranges above. Account for the application’s deployment model: a self-contained app carries its runtime with the published application, so the host’s installed runtime list alone does not establish which runtime the app uses.
  3. Inspect project files and dependency resolution for direct or transitive references to Microsoft.AspNetCore.Server.Kestrel.Core. If that package is used at version 2.3.0 or earlier, update it.

Microsoft describes Kestrel’s role in its Kestrel documentation. Do not treat the presence of a reverse proxy as proof that an application is unaffected: Microsoft says it has identified no mitigating factors.

How to apply the patch

  1. Identify the deployment and version. Use the checks above to determine the application’s .NET line, whether it is framework-dependent or self-contained, and whether it consumes the standalone Kestrel package.
  2. Install the patched servicing release for the applicable .NET line. Microsoft’s advisory gives .NET 8.0.21 Runtime or .NET 8.0.318 SDK, and .NET 9.0.10 Runtime or .NET 9.0.111 SDK, as examples. Confirm the appropriate current release and platform on the official .NET download page.
  3. Update standalone Kestrel package references. If the app uses Microsoft.AspNetCore.Server.Kestrel.Core in the affected 2.x range, update to 2.3.6 or later as directed by the advisory, then rebuild and publish the application with the updated dependency.
  4. Activate the updated runtime. Restart framework-dependent applications after installing the runtime or SDK so they run with the patched runtime.
  5. Rebuild and redeploy self-contained applications. Microsoft explicitly requires affected self-contained applications to be recompiled and redeployed; updating a host runtime by itself does not patch the runtime bundled with an existing app.
  6. Verify the rollout. Check the deployed runtime or artifact version after rollout and record it for operational evidence. This is especially important when multiple hosts, containers, or deployment slots serve the application.

Why this needs a patch rather than a workaround

Microsoft characterizes CVE-2025-55315 as an HTTP request/response smuggling issue arising from inconsistent HTTP request interpretation. Its advisory says an authorized network attacker can use it to bypass a security feature; it does not characterize the attacker as unauthenticated. Microsoft states: “Microsoft has not identified any mitigating factors for this vulnerability.” Use the applicable patched runtime or package as the remediation, rather than relying on an assumed configuration change or network-layer workaround.
