Adding RAM helps when your computer is running short of memory for the programs you use; it is not a guaranteed speed boost. Before buying anything, confirm your exact computer or motherboard model, supported memory type and capacity, available slots, and installation rules. Then install a compatible module or matched kit and verify that the system recognizes it.

When does adding RAM help?

More memory can help if your current capacity is limiting the work you do—for example, when you keep many programs or memory-intensive tasks open. It gives the computer more room to handle those workloads, but it will not necessarily improve performance when memory is not the bottleneck. Kingston’s support guidance puts it plainly: “Additional memory will not necessarily increase the performance of your computer.” There is no general percentage improvement that applies to every PC and workload.

A second identical module can enable dual-channel operation. Kingston says that configuration can effectively double memory bandwidth; that describes memory bandwidth, not a promise that applications will run twice as fast. A system may also run memory below its advertised speed because of processor, chipset, or module-population limits.

Check compatibility before buying

Start with the exact PC model—or, for a custom desktop, the motherboard model. Use its manual or manufacturer support page to confirm the memory generation, module type, maximum capacity, supported speeds, number of slots, and correct slot order. Kingston’s desktop and laptop memory overview and memory support page offer additional compatibility guidance, including a system memory configurator.

Crucial 32GB DDR5 RAM Kit (2x16GB), 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory 262-Pin SODIMM, Compatible with Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000, Black - CT2K16G56C46S5
  • Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
  • Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
  • Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
  • Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
  • DDR generation: Buy only a generation supported by the system. Similar-looking modules are not necessarily compatible.
  • Form factor: Desktop systems generally use DIMMs; laptops generally use smaller SO-DIMMs. They are physically different and are not interchangeable.
  • Capacity and upgradeability: Check the maximum supported capacity, installed memory, open slots, and whether some or all memory is soldered. Some laptops do not have user-upgradeable memory.
  • Speed and population rules: Check the supported data rate and any limits tied to the number of modules or the slots used. Faster-rated RAM may run at a lower supported speed.
  • Kit and channel configuration: If installing multiple modules, a matched kit is a straightforward choice for a multi-channel configuration. Follow the system manual for which sockets to use.

Once compatibility is established, compare kit capacity, module count, and price. Do not choose on a speed rating alone: the platform’s limits determine what the system can use.

Choose an upgrade path

There are two common approaches, and the right one depends on the memory already installed and the system’s design:

A-Tech DDR4 RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 2666MHz PC4-21300 SODIMM Laptop Memory
  • A-Tech 32GB RAM Kit (2 x 16GB Modules), DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 2666MHz / 2667MHz PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V)
  • Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
  • Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
  • Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
  • Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
  • Fill an available slot: Add a compatible module if a suitable slot is free and the resulting capacity and slot population are supported.
  • Replace existing modules: Remove smaller-capacity modules and install a compatible higher-capacity module or matched kit when slots are full, or when a replacement is needed to reach the desired configuration.

Before deciding, account for soldered memory, the total capacity limit, and the board’s channel and slot-population rules. A four-slot desktop motherboard may specify particular paired sockets for two modules; there is no universal slot pair, so do not assume which slots to use.

How to install RAM in a desktop

  1. Check the motherboard manual. Confirm the supported module type and capacity, and identify the correct slot or paired slots for the configuration.
  2. Shut down and disconnect power. Turn off the PC and unplug its AC power cord. Avoid working inside a powered system.
  3. Ground yourself. Touch unpainted grounded metal before handling components, or use an antistatic wrist strap. A strap is optional; grounding is the important precaution.
  4. Open the case and prepare the slot. If needed, release the slot’s retention tabs. Handle the memory by its edges.
  5. Align and seat the module. Match the notch in the module with the key in the socket. Kingston’s desktop memory installation guide likewise instructs users to align the module and socket keys. Press evenly until the module is seated and secured by the retention tabs. Never force it; if it does not align, recheck the orientation.
  6. Close the case and reconnect power. Start the PC and allow time for the first boot if the memory configuration has changed.

How to add RAM to a laptop

Whether laptop memory can be upgraded depends on the exact model: it may be soldered, accessible through a service panel, or installed beneath other components. Confirm that the memory is user-upgradeable and check the model’s service manual before ordering or opening the computer.

  • [Compatibility] Compatible with DDR3 Laptop / Notebook PC, Mini PC, All in one Device
  • [Color] PCB Color is green
  1. Use the manufacturer’s service instructions for the exact model and follow its disassembly and battery precautions.
  2. Disconnect power. Remove the battery only if it is removable and the manufacturer’s instructions call for it.
  3. Install only the compatible SO-DIMM type and capacity specified for the laptop. Follow the service manual’s instructions for accessing and securing the module.
  4. Reassemble the laptop and start it. If the first boot takes longer than usual after the memory change, allow the system time to initialize it.

Mixing modules with different capacities, speeds, or brands may create compatibility issues. Check the laptop maker’s guidance before combining existing memory with a new module; replacing the installed memory with a matched kit may be the simpler supported option.
