Usually, a suspended LockApp.exe is normal. The process is associated with Windows’ lock-screen experience, and a Microsoft Q&A Independent Advisor says it can be suspended during general use. The label alone does not show that Windows is broken or that LockApp.exe caused another problem. Look for a separate, visible symptom—such as a gray screen or trouble signing in—before troubleshooting.
What is LockApp.exe?
LockApp.exe is associated with the Windows lock-screen experience. Microsoft describes the lock screen as the interface shown when you start a device or wake it from sleep; it can display background imagery and other information before you authenticate with a biometric gesture, PIN, or password. See Microsoft’s lock-screen guidance.
The process name identifies its association with that experience, but seeing it in Task Manager does not by itself tell you that it is actively displaying the lock screen or that anything is wrong.
Why does Task Manager say it is suspended?
A Microsoft Q&A Independent Advisor, Sumit, answered a user’s question by saying, “LockApp.exe being suspended is normal during general use.” That is community guidance, not a formal Microsoft technical specification. Microsoft’s developer documentation explains that Windows app lifecycles can include suspension and resumption, but it does not specifically document LockApp.exe’s implementation: app lifecycle for UWP apps.

In practical terms, a suspended label alone is not a diagnosis. The cited sources do not establish a failure rate, resource-use threshold, or universal cause for the state. Do not delete or disable a Windows component just because Task Manager lists it as suspended.
When should you troubleshoot?
Pay attention to what Windows is doing, not just the process status. Troubleshoot the visible issue if you see a gray screen, cannot reach the sign-in screen, cannot sign in, or a relevant Settings page hangs. A Microsoft Q&A thread documents one Windows 11 user who reported a gray screen and sign-in trouble alongside a LockApp.exe hang, but that individual report does not show that suspension caused the issue or that one repair applies to everyone: Microsoft Q&A.

- No visible problem: If Windows locks, wakes, and accepts your sign-in as expected, the suspended status alone is not a reason to intervene.
- A lock-screen or sign-in failure: Troubleshoot that specific failure using guidance appropriate to your Windows version. Do not assume the Task Manager label identifies the cause.
- A network or security alert: Do not decide that an alert is safe from the filename alone. If this is a managed device, follow your organization’s security process. A community discussion about an alert during a Windows 10 update restart is not an official security bulletin: Microsoft Q&A.
A path recorded in one Windows 11 incident report was C:WindowsSystemAppsMicrosoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewyLockApp.exe. That single case is not a complete authenticity check; do not treat a matching path alone as proof that a file is safe.
Where are lock-screen settings?
To change the lock-screen background or information, open Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10, but the available background and status options vary by version. Windows 11 options include Windows Spotlight, a picture, or a slideshow, as well as lock-screen widgets; Windows 10 offers its own background and status choices. What Windows 10 users should know
Microsoft states that free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 devices continue to work, but the end of support matters when deciding how to handle a security or system problem. Check Microsoft’s Windows lock-screen guidance for the current settings route and version-specific options.
