The iPhone 17 Pro makes the clearest case for itself if you want a dedicated telephoto camera or plan to use advanced video formats such as ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2. If you mainly want a fast, high-quality iPhone display and do not need those camera or production tools, the less expensive iPhone 17 may be the better fit.

What’s new, and who should buy it?

Apple’s 2025 iPhone 17 Pro combines a 6.3-inch OLED display with three 48MP rear cameras, an 18MP Center Stage front camera, and video features aimed at more demanding creative workflows. The practical question is not whether those specifications sound professional; it is whether you will use the extra camera reach and video controls enough to justify the price over the standard iPhone 17.

  • Choose the Pro if you regularly shoot distant subjects, want more flexibility when framing photos, or can use ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, or genlock in your video workflow.
  • Consider the standard iPhone 17 if your priorities are a high-refresh-rate display and everyday photography without the Pro’s telephoto and advanced video requirements.

Apple’s launch announcement called the Pro “by far the most powerful iPhone we’ve ever made” and described an “enormous leap in battery life.” Those are Apple’s promotional claims, not independent measurements. Reviewers have provided useful impressions, but their experiences should not be confused with standardized comparative testing.

Design, display, and handling

The iPhone 17 Pro has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 2622-by-1206 resolution, 460 pixels per inch, adaptive ProMotion up to 120Hz, and an Always-On display, according to Apple’s technical specifications. Apple’s launch announcement also lists peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits and Ceramic Shield 2, describing improvements against previous models; those brightness and durability comparisons are Apple’s claims.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Cosmic Orange- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

The display is a strong part of the package, but it is not by itself a reason to pay for the Pro. Ars Technica noted in its 2025 review context that the standard iPhone 17 used the same display panel and cost $300 less. That is a historical comparison, not a current price quote; check local pricing before buying.

The Pro’s 6.3-inch size is distinct from the larger iPhone 17 Pro Max. Do not assume the Pro Max’s screen or battery characteristics apply to this model. The right size is a handling preference: consider how a 6.3-inch phone fits your grip, pockets, and one-handed use before choosing it.

Camera system: the main reason to go Pro

Apple describes the rear camera system as three 48MP Fusion cameras: Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto. The company says the system supports optical-quality zoom up to 8x. The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage camera. These are manufacturer descriptions; megapixel counts alone do not establish image quality, and the value of the system depends on what and how you shoot.

Telephoto reach and everyday photos

A dedicated telephoto camera is most useful when you cannot move closer to a subject or want a tighter composition without relying only on a crop from the main camera. It can be valuable for events, portraits, travel, and candid shots from a distance. If most of your photos are close-ups, meals, family scenes, or wide landscapes, the additional reach may matter less.

TechRadar’s reviewer found the 4x telephoto sharper and described the front camera as a significant upgrade, but was not convinced the telephoto was an overwhelming improvement over the previous generation. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus measurement. It is a reminder to distinguish having more camera options from getting a dramatic improvement in every shot.

Front camera

Apple’s 18MP Center Stage front camera is designed to give selfie and video-call users more flexibility. TechRadar’s reviewer particularly welcomed the front-camera upgrade. If you frequently record yourself or join video calls, that may be more relevant than a rear-camera feature you rarely use.

Video tools: who benefits from ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and genlock?

Apple’s September 2025 announcement lists ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and genlock among the iPhone 17 Pro’s video capabilities. These features are most compelling when they fit an existing production process—not simply because they appear on a specification sheet.

  • ProRes RAW is relevant to creators who want a high-end capture format and have an editing workflow that can handle it.
  • Apple Log 2 is aimed at workflows where footage will be color graded rather than used straight from the camera.
  • Genlock matters in setups that need synchronized capture across devices or cameras.

If you record casual clips and share them without advanced editing or synchronization, these options may add little practical value. TechRadar’s review also discussed the advanced video toolkit as a benefit for creators; it does not make every owner a better videographer by itself.

Battery life and charging

Apple lists up to 33 hours of video playback and up to 30 hours of streamed video playback for the iPhone 17 Pro. These are manufacturer estimates from Apple’s cited preproduction testing notes, not an independent standardized comparison with other phones. Actual battery life varies with use, settings, network conditions, and other factors.

Separately, 9to5Mac’s reviewer described battery life as excellent and said they could make it through a day. That is a personal-use report, not a guarantee for every owner or a replacement for Apple’s test figures.

Apple says a 40W-or-higher adapter with the included USB-C cable can charge the phone to up to 50% in 20 minutes; a 30W-or-higher adapter with MagSafe can reach up to 50% in 30 minutes. Apple notes that those adapters and the MagSafe charger are sold separately. The box includes a USB-C cable but no power adapter, and a compatible USB-C adapter can be used—you do not necessarily need to buy a new one.

The phone supports MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W as well as USB-C charging. The quoted fast-charge results are Apple’s specifications, not independent test results.

iPhone 17 Pro vs. iPhone 17: which is the better value?

What to compare iPhone 17 Pro iPhone 17
Display 6.3-inch OLED, ProMotion up to 120Hz, and Always-On, according to Apple. Ars Technica said the standard model had the same display panel in its 2025 review context.
Rear cameras Three 48MP Fusion cameras—Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto—with optical-quality zoom up to 8x, according to Apple. The cited review comparison does not establish equivalent telephoto reach; compare the current camera specifications for the exact model you are considering.
Front camera 18MP Center Stage, according to Apple. Not stated in the cited comparison.
Video workflow Apple lists ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and genlock. Not stated in the cited comparison.
Battery Apple estimates up to 33 hours of video playback or up to 30 hours of streamed playback. Not stated in the cited comparison.
Price comparison Tom’s Guide reported a US starting price of $1,099 in its 2025 review; this is historical, not a current quote. Ars Technica described it as $300 less than the Pro in its 2025 review context; verify present-day local prices.

The Pro’s case rests on capabilities, not a universally better everyday experience. If telephoto reach, the front-camera changes, or the production formats will improve work you actually do, the upgrade may be worth paying for. If the display is your main reason for considering the Pro, Ars Technica’s comparison makes the standard iPhone 17 worth checking first. Apple announced that iPhone 17 Pro availability began on September 19, 2025; current stock and prices vary by market and should be verified with the seller.

Storage and what comes in the box

Apple lists iPhone 17 Pro capacities of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Choose based on how much video, photo, and app data you expect to keep on the phone; creators recording large files may have different storage needs from someone who mostly streams and backs up media elsewhere.

The box includes a USB-C cable, but not a power adapter. Apple lists MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W and USB-C charging. Its specified fast-charge rates depend on separately sold, sufficiently powerful adapters or a MagSafe charger, as described above.

Verdict: how pro can you go?

The iPhone 17 Pro is easiest to recommend to photographers and video creators who can make real use of its telephoto camera or its advanced capture and synchronization options. For everyone else, the standard iPhone 17 deserves a close look: the Pro’s display advantage is not clear in Ars Technica’s comparison, while the Pro’s strongest case is its extra camera and video toolkit. Check current prices in your region before deciding, since the cited dollar figures are review-time comparisons from 2025.
