GeForce NOW is NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service, and yes, it has a free membership. It streams supported PC games from NVIDIA’s cloud computers to compatible devices, so you can play without installing the game locally. The free tier requires no payment method to register, but it has queues, sponsorship messages and basic performance. Paid options add performance and queue benefits, subject to monthly playtime limits.
What is GeForce NOW?
GeForce NOW runs supported games on NVIDIA’s cloud hardware and streams the gameplay to your computer, phone, tablet, TV or another compatible device. You use supported PC game-store accounts to access games you own; the service is not a library that automatically includes every PC game.
NVIDIA says its catalog includes more than 4,500 PC games. That is a company-published count, not a guarantee that every game is available in every region or on every membership. NVIDIA’s US service page lists connections to Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, PC Game Pass and Ubisoft Connect, among other supported stores and subscriptions. Check the specific game’s availability before signing up.
Ready-to-Play and Install-to-Play games
NVIDIA labels some games Ready-to-Play, meaning they are available to stream instantly. Other games are available through Install-to-Play, which lets eligible premium members install additional opted-in Steam games on the cloud system. A game’s store ownership and its availability through GeForce NOW are separate questions.

Is GeForce NOW free?
Yes. NVIDIA offers a Free membership, and says you do not need a credit card or PayPal to register. Its US marketplace listing describes Free as ad-supported, with up to 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second. NVIDIA’s FAQ says free members can see up to two minutes of sponsorship messages before each gaming session while in queue; NVIDIA dates that change to March 5, 2024.
The free tier uses basic rigs, and performance and availability can vary by game and server. Expect to wait in a queue at busy times; the paid memberships provide priority queue access. NVIDIA does not promise that the free tier will deliver the same performance or availability for every game.

Memberships, prices and playtime limits
NVIDIA offers Free, Performance and Ultimate memberships, plus one-day passes. The prices below are from NVIDIA’s US marketplace listing when surfaced for this article; they can change. Check NVIDIA’s checkout page for the current price, billing term, taxes and regional offer.

Monthly playtime on premium memberships
NVIDIA’s current FAQ says Performance and Ultimate include 100 hours of playtime per billing month, with up to 15 unused hours rolling over. The allowance resets each billing month. After reaching it, you can buy additional premium playtime or continue with a basic experience until the reset.
NVIDIA also says that, starting April 30, 2026, premium members retain access to Install-to-Play games even if they have not purchased extra playtime. The allowance and rollover figures are NVIDIA’s stated terms; consult the FAQ for the latest rules and any regional differences.

Which devices and internet connections work?
NVIDIA lists desktop and laptop computers, Chromebooks, Linux PCs, phones and tablets, select Samsung and LG TVs, streaming devices, and handhelds including Steam Deck. Exact compatibility depends on the device model, app or browser, software version and region. Check NVIDIA’s current system requirements for your specific device before buying hardware for GeForce NOW.

These are recommendations, not guarantees of smooth streaming. Connection stability and local network conditions also affect play.
Is GeForce NOW worth trying?
The Free membership is a practical way to check whether your games, devices and connection work well with cloud streaming before paying. Consider Performance or Ultimate if you want stronger cloud hardware or priority access, and compare their current regional terms against how much you expect to play. If you need premium play beyond the included allowance, factor in the cost of additional hours; if you only want to test the service for a day, NVIDIA also lists Day Passes.
