YouTube Music’s April 2026 Now Playing redesign lets you bring the Up Next queue into view while keeping the playback controls and cover art on screen. Lyrics now sits in the action carousel, while Related is reached from the song title. The rollout is server-side, so the layout you see may differ from the one described here.
How the dual-pane Now Playing screen works
In the redesigned player, playback controls and cover art remain visible as you pull up the Up Next queue in the lower part of the screen. One swipe reveals the queue partway; another swipe brings back the previous fullscreen player design. This makes it possible to check what is coming next without fully leaving Now Playing.

The April 23, 2026 report from 9to5Google describes a slightly larger cover image, icon-based Song and Video controls, and a thicker scrubber container that expands further when tapped or scrubbed.
Where did Lyrics and Related go?

Who can see the redesign?
9to5Google reported on April 23, 2026, that the redesign was widely rolling out on Android and iOS as a server-side change. The report identified Android version 9.14 and iOS version 9.15 at that time; those are dated version references, not statements of the current app versions. Because the change is server-side, having those app versions does not guarantee that every account will show the same player.

The report observed that dismissing the queue or force-stopping the app could trigger the new look, but neither action is a guaranteed fix. It does not establish country-by-country availability or exactly when each account receives the layout.

This interface has changed over time. In September 2025, 9to5Google reported an earlier dual-pane design with a compact action carousel, Lyrics in that carousel, Related accessible through the song title, and a partially expanded queue showing around four tracks. In December 2025, the publication described ongoing variations and said the design was not yet widely rolled out. The April 2026 report marked a later, broader availability wave. 9to5Google’s September 2025 coverage provides that earlier context.

In July 2026, 9to5Google reported a separate fullscreen-cover-art redesign as a test, not a widely rolled-out replacement. That report is evidence of continued experimentation, but it does not establish whether the test remains active or has since reached all users. As of October 8, 2026, the available reporting does not establish that everyone sees one identical Now Playing layout. The July 2026 report describes that separate test.
