No. Independent tests have measured brief wired charging peaks of about 25–27W on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with suitable USB-C chargers. Apple’s often-cited 20W figure describes the adapter used for its fast-charge benchmark; it is not a published 20W maximum for the phone. A 30W adapter can help early in a charge, but power drops as the battery fills, so the difference in a full charge is modest.
What Apple’s 20W fast-charge figure means
Apple says the iPhone 15 Pro Max can reach about 50% charge in around 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher, available separately. Apple’s specification notes that this result came from testing preproduction iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max units with an Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter in August 2023. Apple also cautions that charge time varies with settings and environmental factors, and actual results will vary. Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max technical specifications describe a fast-charge result, not a maximum charging wattage.
What independent charging tests measured
Independent tests support the conclusion that the phone can briefly draw more than 20W, though their methods and setups differ. These are separate measurements, not a standardized head-to-head comparison.
| Test | Reported result | What the result represents |
|---|---|---|
| PhoneArena, 2024 | Roughly 26W for about 17 minutes | Its test began at 1% using a 30W USB-C charger and Apple’s included cable; the measured rate then declined in stages. PhoneArena’s charging test |
| DXOMARK, 2023 | 27W maximum | Maximum charging speed measured in its battery test. DXOMARK’s battery test |
| ChargerLAB, 2023 | Around 25W with many compatible chargers; about 17W with one tested 65W charger | Compatibility measurements show that a charger’s printed maximum output alone does not determine the phone’s charging rate. ChargerLAB’s compatibility test |
The peak is not sustained throughout a charge. PhoneArena’s curve shows the rate falling as charging continues, and results can also vary with the charger, the phone’s settings and use, temperature, and whether a charger is sharing output with other devices.

Does a 30W charger finish the job much faster than a 20W one?
Not dramatically, according to one reported full-charge comparison. 9to5Mac reported a video test that took 2 hours 11 minutes with a 30W adapter and 2 hours 21 minutes with a 20W adapter. Those are the results of that particular test, not universal charge-time guarantees. 9to5Mac’s report illustrates why a higher-rated adapter does not translate into a proportionally faster full charge: the phone’s input rate changes as the battery fills.
Which charger should you use?
Use a compatible USB-C PD adapter you already own
If you have a reputable USB-C Power Delivery charger, try it before buying another one. Apple recommends a USB-C cable and compatible USB-C PD charger for faster wired charging on iPhone 15 models. The iPhone 15 Pro Max box includes a one-meter USB-C charge cable that supports fast charging, but no power adapter. Apple’s specifications list the included cable and separately sold adapter.

Choose 20W for Apple’s stated fast-charge setup
A 20W adapter is sufficient for Apple’s published fast-charge benchmark. It is a straightforward option if you want a compatible fast-charge setup without paying for extra rated output that may only provide a modest benefit.
Choose 30W if the small early-charge advantage matters
A reputable 30W USB-C PD adapter is a reasonable choice if you want the early charging advantage measured in some tests or need one adapter to power multiple devices. It does not mean the iPhone will draw 30W continuously. Check whether using multiple ports at once reduces the output available to the phone, and do not choose a charger solely because its label says 65W or more.

What else affects charging speed?
Apple’s current charging guidance, published March 30, 2026, says USB-A chargers limit iPhone 15 models to 7.5W. Charging can also be affected by shared multiport output, hubs, connected accessories, intensive use while charging, and temperature. For faster wired charging, use a compatible USB-C PD adapter and connect it directly where practical. See Apple’s guidance on iPhone charge speeds.
Wired charging figures should not be confused with wireless ratings. Apple lists MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W and Qi charging up to 7.5W for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple’s technical specifications give those wireless limits separately from its wired fast-charge benchmark.
