1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo type lowercase Greek eta (η), insert it from your app’s symbol menu, or use a supported code shortcut. In Word for Windows, the direct options are Insert > Symbol > More Symbols or typing 03B7 and pressing Alt+X. Other Office apps and Mac versions have their own symbol menus; the shortcuts do not work everywhere.
Quick reference: choose a method by app
| App and platform | Recommended method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Word for Windows | Insert > Symbol > More Symbols, or type 03B7 and press Alt+X. |
Use a font that includes η. Select only the code before pressing Alt+X if adjacent text interferes with conversion. |
| Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook for Windows | Use the app’s symbol picker; if Unicode conversion is unavailable, copy η from Windows Character Map. | Microsoft warns that some Office programs, including PowerPoint, may not convert Unicode codes. |
| Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook for Mac | Use the app-specific symbol or character-viewer menu. | Menu labels can differ across Mac Office releases. |
| Supported desktop equation editor | Type eta and then a delimiter such as Space. |
Works only in listed desktop apps and equation contexts; it is not a universal body-text or web-app shortcut. |
Type η in Word for Windows
Insert it from the symbol menu
- Place the cursor where η should appear.
- Choose Insert > Symbol > More Symbols.
- Choose a font that contains the character, locate lowercase eta (η), and select Insert.
Microsoft notes that fonts do not all contain the same characters; its Word symbol guidance identifies Segoe UI Symbol as a font with many Unicode symbols. See Microsoft’s instructions for inserting a symbol in Word.
Convert the Unicode code
Type 03B7 where you want eta, then press Alt+X. Word converts the hexadecimal code to η, whose Unicode value is U+03B7. If the code is next to other text and Word converts the wrong characters, select just 03B7 before pressing Alt+X. Microsoft documents this conversion method and its limitations in its Unicode character instructions.
Insert η in Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook for Windows
Use the app’s symbol-insertion interface when available. If a Unicode code followed by Alt+X does not convert in your app, Windows Character Map is a practical fallback:

- Open Character Map in Windows.
- Choose a font containing η and locate the lowercase character.
- Select η, copy it, then paste it into Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook.
Microsoft lists Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint among the desktop products covered by its Unicode guidance, but cautions that some programs—including PowerPoint—cannot convert codes. The availability of the shortcut therefore depends on the app. Use the symbol picker or Character Map rather than assuming Alt+X will work in every Office program.
Type η in Office for Mac
The menu route varies by app. Microsoft’s Mac instructions list these paths:

- PowerPoint: Insert > Symbol, then expand the symbol viewer and choose the character.
- Outlook: Edit > Emoji & Symbols, then expand the viewer from emoji to characters and choose η.
These menu names come from Microsoft’s Mac symbol-insertion guidance; labels may differ in newer releases from the versions covered there.
Use the eta Math AutoCorrect command in an equation
In a supported desktop equation editor, type eta and press Space or another delimiter to convert the command to η. Microsoft maps the command to U+03B7 in its Math AutoCorrect reference.

This is an equation-context shortcut, not a general command for typing eta in ordinary text. Microsoft lists support in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote for Windows and Mac, and Outlook for Windows. The codes are case-sensitive, are not supported in web apps, and in Word depend on using Unicode conversion mode rather than LaTeX mode. If the command does not convert, use the symbol menu instead.

Lowercase Greek eta is η, Unicode U+03B7. The uppercase form is Η, a different character. If you need eta in a document, equation, spreadsheet, presentation, or email, make sure you select the lowercase glyph rather than the visually similar uppercase form.
