Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 (RHEL 10) launched on May 20, 2025. Its defining changes are image mode for managing the operating system through container-style workflows, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Lightspeed for AI-assisted administration, and security features that include post-quantum cryptography algorithms still marked Technology Preview in RHEL 10.0. Red Hat’s documentation index now includes RHEL 10.2 and 10.1 as well as 10.0, so the launch features below are not a complete account of every update in the current RHEL 10 line.
What changed in RHEL 10?
Red Hat announced RHEL 10 at Red Hat Summit on May 20, 2025, and said it was generally available through the Customer Portal. Developers could also access it through Red Hat’s no-cost Developer programs. Red Hat’s launch announcement emphasized changes to OS lifecycle management, administration, security, and deployment.
Image mode brings OS management into container-style workflows
Image mode is Red Hat’s approach to building, deploying, and managing the operating system and applications in a shared, image-based workflow. Red Hat says this can help reduce configuration drift. It is a management model for teams comfortable with container-style practices, not a claim that conventional host management disappears or that every existing RHEL system must be managed this way.
Red Hat highlighted ABB as an early user. In the launch announcement, ABB said image mode helped simplify its OS build process and standardize installation across industrial, edge, and hybrid-cloud use cases. That example illustrates the intended workflow; it does not establish that image mode fits every organization or workload.

Lightspeed adds AI-assisted administration
RHEL 10 introduced Red Hat Enterprise Linux Lightspeed, which Red Hat describes as AI-assisted support for Linux management. The launch announcement also highlighted package recommendations in Insights image builder, intended to help inform package choices earlier in the build process, and Insights planning capabilities for viewing roadmap and lifecycle information.
Post-quantum cryptography is a preview, not a production-ready headline feature
Red Hat promoted RHEL 10’s preparation for future quantum-based threats. However, the RHEL 10.0 Release Notes classify all post-quantum cryptography algorithms in that release as Technology Preview. Do not treat the launch positioning as confirmation that those algorithms were fully supported for production use in 10.0.
Cloud images, extensions, and a RISC-V developer preview
Red Hat said ready-to-run RHEL 10 images were available for Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. It also announced an extensions repository for community-supported software such as Podman Desktop, partner-validated solutions, and a RISC-V developer preview with SiFive for the HiFive P550 architecture. Availability and support may differ by offering; check Red Hat’s current documentation for the specific image, extension, or hardware you plan to use.
What should you check before upgrading?
RHEL 10.0’s documented in-place upgrade path
The RHEL 10.0 overview describes an in-place upgrade path from RHEL 9.6 to RHEL 10.0 for these architectures:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRank #3
- AMD and Intel 64-bit (x86-64-v3)
- 64-bit ARM (ARMv8.0-A)
- IBM Power little-endian (POWER10)
- 64-bit IBM Z (z14)
That overview says a direct in-place upgrade from RHEL 8 to RHEL 10 is not possible; the route it describes is RHEL 8 to RHEL 9, followed by RHEL 9 to RHEL 10. These are details from the 10.0 documentation, not a substitute for checking the current RHEL 9-to-10 upgrade guidance for your system before acting.
Review Identity Management dependencies if you use integrated DNS
The RHEL 10.0 overview identifies a limitation in which the Identity Management server may function only partially or not at all. It specifically notes that installing ipa-server-dns and configuring the embedded DNS server with --setup-dns may not work. Organizations relying on IdM DNS should check the current release notes for the status of this issue before adopting 10.0.

Expect some installer changes
The 10.0 overview documents these changes in the installer:
- Newly created users receive administrative privileges by default unless that option is deselected.
- The time-zone selection experience has been revised.
- RDP replaces VNC for graphical remote access.
Review the user-creation options during installation so that administrative access matches your security policy.

Which RHEL 10 information is current?
Red Hat’s RHEL 10 documentation index lists release notes for 10.2, 10.1, and 10.0. The 10.2 Release Notes confirm that they cover RHEL 10.2, but the launch announcement and 10.0 overview do not provide a complete list of changes through 10.2. For the newest fixes and feature details, consult the notes for the specific minor release you run rather than assuming that every 10.0 launch item is unchanged.
What about Red Hat’s Security Select Add-On?
In its 2025 launch announcement, Red Hat described a planned Security Select Add-On through which customers could request fixes for up to 10 specific CVEs annually. That figure describes the announced add-on, not a general RHEL security allowance or an independently measured security outcome. The announcement does not establish whether the add-on is currently available or what its present terms are, so confirm availability and conditions with Red Hat before relying on it.
