Microsoft announced broad Windows availability in October 2025, while its current support pages say access can depend on region, language, rollout, and account licensing. Vision can explain what is on screen; it cannot operate your PC for you.
What is Copilot Vision on Windows 11?
Copilot Vision is a screen-sharing feature in Microsoft Copilot. During an active session, you can share your whole desktop or a particular app or window, then ask Copilot questions about visible text, images, charts, tables, dashboards, or interface elements. Microsoft describes it as a way to get explanations and guidance based on what you are looking at. Microsoft’s Vision getting-started guide outlines the feature and its requirements.
It is not remote control: Vision does not click, type, scroll, or otherwise manipulate the screen. It also cannot read video or animated GIFs. Keep the relevant content visible and avoid rapidly switching windows, since Copilot may respond about the wrong content if the screen changes quickly. Microsoft explains how Vision works.
Is Copilot Vision free, and is it available everywhere?
Not necessarily. Microsoft’s October 16, 2025 Windows announcement said Copilot Vision was available in all markets where Copilot is offered and on every Windows 11 device where Copilot is available. That was a broad availability statement, not a guarantee of access for every country, account, language, or user. Current Microsoft Support documentation says availability may vary during rollout and depends on supported regions and languages. Microsoft’s October 2025 announcement and its current support pages describe different parts of that picture.

There is also a distinction between general Copilot and Vision-specific access. Microsoft describes general Copilot as free, but its current Vision support material lists a Microsoft Copilot license for work accounts and a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription for personal accounts. The support pages are not fully consistent in scope and wording, so check the current requirements for your account rather than assuming Vision is free for everyone. Vision access requirements and Microsoft’s Copilot comparison provide the relevant qualifications.
How do you share your screen with Copilot Vision?
- Open Copilot: Launch the Microsoft Copilot app or Copilot Chat on Windows and sign in with an account that meets the applicable access requirements. Microsoft says the Copilot app should be installed on new Windows 11 PCs; if it is missing, download it from the Microsoft Store. See Access Microsoft Copilot on Windows.
- Start a voice conversation: Vision works during voice conversations in the documented flow, and microphone access is required.
- Choose what to share: Select the screen-sharing option, then choose the entire screen or an individual app or window.
- Ask about what is visible: Use a spoken question—for example, “I’m stuck on this screen. Walk me through the next steps to complete this task.” Keep the relevant content in view while Copilot responds.
- Stop sharing: Select Stop sharing when finished. Sharing ends, but the voice conversation can continue. Microsoft’s Vision usage instructions cover the documented interaction.
Microsoft’s Windows rollout announcement described visual highlights for some “show me how” requests, such as indicating where to click. Do not assume every user has that capability: feature availability has varied by rollout stage. An October 28, 2025 Windows Insider post covered an earlier text-input rollout, which is historical context rather than evidence that the same feature state is available to everyone now. Can Copilot see your screen, and what happens to the data?
Copilot can interpret the content you deliberately share after you start a Vision session. Microsoft says the screen or camera input is processed for the active session. Its current explanation says audio and video data may be temporarily retained to support user feedback and deleted after 48 hours. Separately, Microsoft’s privacy FAQ says Vision images are not used to train models or personalize the experience, and screenshots or camera images are not stored after the session. These statements distinguish active-session processing and possible temporary retention from longer-term image storage. How Vision works and Microsoft’s Copilot privacy FAQ describe these practices.
Text transcripts are different from the images Copilot sees. Text may remain in chat history, where you can delete it. If a screen contains sensitive material, consider what you share and review the chat history separately from the temporary screen-sharing session.

What Copilot Vision can—and cannot—do
- Can: Explain visible content, help interpret an interface, and talk you through steps based on what you have shared.
- Cannot: Click controls, type, scroll, read video, or read animated GIFs.
- May vary: Availability and additional rollout features, including visual click highlights, depend on rollout and account conditions.
- Does not require a dedicated peripheral: The documented flow uses the Copilot app, voice conversation, and microphone access; Microsoft does not identify a special keyboard, headset, or new PC as a requirement.
