Usually, don’t remove SmartByte automatically. If your Dell computer has slow internet, Dell recommends updating Windows, your network drivers and SmartByte, then comparing network performance with SmartByte on and off. Leave it off if a comparable retest is faster; if there’s no improvement, turn it back on and troubleshoot other causes.

What SmartByte does

Dell describes SmartByte as client software designed to prioritize network traffic. Its historical technical white paper says it was designed primarily for Inspiron and XPS consumer systems, giving priority to real-time applications and video streaming over less time-sensitive traffic. That is its intended function—not proof that it improves performance on every computer. Dell’s current troubleshooting guidance is the relevant source for deciding whether to disable it.

Dell says SmartByte can contribute to reduced overall network speed in specific circumstances because it allocates a small percentage of available bandwidth to its own operation. Other factors can also cause measured speeds to fall below an internet service provider’s average. The guidance therefore calls for a test on the affected computer rather than assuming SmartByte is responsible.

How to decide whether to turn SmartByte off

Use Dell’s sequence to compare performance while changing one set of conditions at a time. Record results so you can judge whether the change is meaningful, and use the same testing method for each comparison.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. Measure a baseline. Test network performance and record the result.
  2. Update Windows and network drivers. Update Windows and the wireless and Ethernet drivers, restarting if prompted. Test again and record the result.
  3. Update SmartByte. Note the installed SmartByte version, update the application, and test again.
  4. Switch SmartByte off. Open the SmartByte app, turn off its on/off slider, and retest using the same method.
  5. Apply the result. If performance improves with SmartByte off, leave it off. If there is no speed change, turn it back on.
  6. Continue troubleshooting if needed. If turning SmartByte off did not improve performance, Dell says the problem is not associated with SmartByte based on that test; continue with standard network troubleshooting.

This is a reversible comparison for your computer. It does not establish that SmartByte causes every slow connection, or that removing it is necessary on every Dell model. Dell’s instructions describe using the app’s slider to turn it off and back on.

SmartByte is not Intel Killer Control Center

Intel Killer Control Center is a separate network-prioritization product, not another name for SmartByte. Intel says Killer networking adapters can use driver-only packages without the Control Center, though some features are lost. Intel’s Killer Control Center FAQ covers that product.

Intel also documents turning off the Killer Prioritization Engine and, optionally, disabling startup or the Killer Network Service for a driver-only setup updated through an OEM or Windows updates. Those steps apply to Intel Killer software—not to SmartByte. Intel’s update instructions should not be used as SmartByte removal directions.
