Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your mouse scrolls too far, barely moves, goes in the wrong direction, or stops scrolling, first check the scroll settings and connection before assuming the mouse is broken. Work through the checks below: compare another app, verify the settings for your computer, reconnect or power the mouse, clean it safely, and test it on another computer if needed.
First, identify what is going wrong
Notice whether scrolling is absent, erratic, too fast or too slow, or simply reversed. Also check whether the problem occurs in more than one app and whether it changes when you use a different window. These clues help distinguish a setting or app issue from a connection problem or possible hardware fault; they do not prove a cause by themselves.
- Wrong direction: Check the operating system’s scroll-direction setting.
- Too much or too little movement: Adjust how much content a wheel movement scrolls.
- Works in some places but not others: Compare apps and windows. If only one app is affected, consult that app’s help or the mouse maker’s guidance; a general Windows or macOS setting may not resolve it.
- Scrolling stops or drops out: Check power and the connection, then test the mouse on another computer.
Adjust scrolling settings in Windows
Windows 11
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. Adjust the number of lines to scroll with each wheel movement or choose the option to scroll one screen at a time. If the direction is reversed, change the scrolling direction setting. If scrolling over a window that is not active does not work, check the setting for scrolling inactive windows when hovering over them. The exact controls available can depend on the device and Windows version. Microsoft’s Windows mouse settings guidance describes these options.
Windows 10
Open Settings > Devices > Mouse to find the basic wheel-scrolling controls. The options and labels can differ from Windows 11; use the settings available on your system rather than expecting every control to appear in both versions. Microsoft’s mouse settings page covers Windows scrolling settings.

Horizontal scrolling
Some mice support horizontal scrolling, but the feature depends on the mouse. If horizontal movement is unavailable, check the device’s documentation before treating it as a fault. Microsoft’s settings guidance notes horizontal scrolling controls for supported mice.
Change scroll direction on a Mac
If the wheel moves content in a direction that feels reversed, open System Settings > Mouse and check Natural scrolling. Apple describes this option as moving window contents in the same direction as your fingers. Toggle it and try scrolling again to see which direction suits you. Apple’s mouse settings guide explains the option.

Check power and the connection
A mouse that disconnects or responds inconsistently may have a power or connection problem rather than a wheel-setting issue. Try the checks that match your mouse type:
- Battery-powered mouse: Replace or recharge the batteries.
- Wired USB mouse: Unplug and firmly reconnect it, then try another USB port.
- USB wireless receiver: Disconnect and reconnect the receiver. If it is connected through a USB hub, plug it directly into the computer to check whether the hub is involved.
- Bluetooth mouse: Confirm it is paired, within range, and charged. If those basics do not help, investigate Bluetooth drivers, services, or updates using guidance for your computer and mouse.
Microsoft recommends checking the connection and testing hardware on another PC when a device does not appear to work. Its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance covers issues that can include pairing, range, battery, drivers, services, and updates. For a USB mouse or receiver, Microsoft also advises trying another port and bypassing a hub where applicable. Microsoft’s USB troubleshooting page provides connection guidance.

- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
Clean the wheel carefully
Dust or debris around the wheel is worth checking if scrolling is uneven, but cleaning instructions can vary by mouse model. Disconnect the mouse or remove its batteries before cleaning. Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab to gently wipe the exterior, wheel, and sensor. Do not spray or pour liquid directly onto the mouse: Microsoft Support’s cleaning guidance says, “Don’t apply liquids directly to your mouse or keyboard.” For Microsoft mice, the guidance permits up to 70% isopropyl alcohol applied to a soft cloth; follow the manufacturer’s instructions for other models and cleaning products.
Test the mouse on another computer
Connecting the mouse to a second computer helps isolate whether the problem follows the device. If it works there, investigate the original computer’s settings, connection, software, or drivers. If it fails on another computer as well, the mouse may need replacement, though that test alone is not a guarantee that the mouse is defective.

If the wheel misbehaves only in one application, check that application’s settings and support resources. If the problem is limited to one mouse model, consult its manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning, software, drivers, or repair. General operating-system guidance cannot diagnose every app or model, and model-specific instructions should take precedence for repair and cleaning.
