It supports private and group chats, file sharing, voice and video calls, broadcast channels, and bots. Its most important privacy distinction is that ordinary cloud chats sync across devices, while Telegram’s Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted. Telegram Premium is optional; Telegram says features that existed before Premium remain free.
What is Telegram Messenger?
Telegram describes itself as a cloud-based mobile and desktop messaging app focused on security and speed. In practical terms, it is a communication service for sending messages and files, talking one-to-one or in groups, making calls, following broadcast channels, and using bots. Chats can sync across your devices when you sign in to Telegram.
Telegram is not limited to a single phone app. Telegram lists official clients for Android, iPhone and iPad, Windows, macOS, Linux, and the web. Its apps page says the apps are open source and support reproducible builds. Check the current app listing for minimum operating-system requirements, which can change.
What can you do with Telegram?
Message people and share files
You can use Telegram for individual conversations and send files in chats. Cloud chats are available across devices through Telegram’s cloud, which makes it easier to continue a conversation from another signed-in client.

Talk in groups
Groups are designed for many-to-many discussion. Members can converse, while admins can use moderation settings, permissions, replies, and topics to organize activity. Telegram says groups can hold up to 200,000 members; capacity and product limits may change.
Follow channels
Channels are for one-to-many broadcasting rather than open group discussion. Posts appear under the channel’s identity, and Telegram says channels can have unlimited subscribers. Public channels have usernames and can be found through Telegram search. Private channels require an invitation or invite link.
Make voice and video calls
Telegram supports voice and video calls. Telegram says calls are end-to-end encrypted. That description applies to calls and should not be generalized to ordinary cloud chats.

Use bots carefully
Bots add automated interactions and services to Telegram, but most are built by third-party developers. A bot receives messages sent to it. In groups, whether a bot can see all messages depends in part on its privacy mode; Telegram says bots with privacy mode disabled may see all group messages.

Treat a bot like a stranger: do not send it passwords, Telegram login codes, or bank details. Telegram’s official FAQ provides further information about bot privacy and behavior.
How do Telegram chats differ in privacy?
Telegram’s encryption does not mean that every conversation is end-to-end encrypted. The distinction between its two chat types matters:

- Cloud chats: These are stored in Telegram’s cloud and sync across your devices. Telegram does not describe ordinary cloud chats as end-to-end encrypted.
- Secret Chats: Telegram describes these as end-to-end encrypted. They are the chat option to consider when you specifically need that form of encryption.

Is Telegram free, and what does Premium add?
Telegram says that features available before Telegram Premium was introduced remain free. Its Premium FAQ identifies free features including cloud storage, large groups and channels, voice and video calls, multiple devices and accounts, and stickers.

Premium is an optional paid subscription with additional features. Telegram lists examples such as doubled limits, uploads of up to 4 GB, faster downloads, voice-to-text, Premium stickers and reactions, advanced chat management, and other customizations. Feature availability may differ by client; Telegram notes that some apps may not immediately support every Premium feature.

Telegram lists subscription routes through the App Store, Google Play, or @PremiumBot in supported direct Android, Desktop, and macOS apps. There is no single price that applies everywhere: the amount can vary by country and purchase route. Check the subscription screen in your app for the price and availability where you live. Telegram says subscriptions through its bot are discounted because they are not subject to Apple or Google fees; verify the current offer in a supported app before subscribing.

Choose a group when people need to participate in a shared conversation. Choose a channel when a person or organization needs to publish updates for an audience. Telegram’s current FAQ explains its group and channel features.
Which devices can you use?
Telegram lists apps for Android, iPhone and iPad, Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as web clients. This broad client coverage makes it possible to use Telegram on mobile, desktop, or in a browser, while cloud chats sync across signed-in devices. The official apps page lists Telegram’s clients and notes that its apps are open source and support reproducible builds. For installation, compatibility, and current minimum OS versions, consult the listing for your device.
Is Telegram right for you?
Telegram may suit you if you want one service for cross-device messaging, large group discussions, broadcast channels, calls, file sharing, and bot-based features. Consider your privacy needs before using it for sensitive conversations: ordinary cloud chats sync through Telegram’s cloud, while Secret Chats are Telegram’s end-to-end encrypted chat option. If you only need the free core features, Premium is not required; consider it only if its listed extras are useful to you.
