Apple released iOS 18.1.1 on November 19, 2024, as a security update—not a broad performance overhaul. Some users posted complaints about battery drain or performance, while others reported no issue or said the update fixed a problem. Those accounts show mixed individual experiences, not evidence that the update was a widespread disaster or that users broadly wanted iOS 17.
What iOS 18.1.1 was—and what Apple said about it
Apple’s release notes described iOS 18.1.1 this way: “This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users.” Apple’s short description identifies security as the update’s stated purpose; it does not establish that the update had no other effects on users’ phones. Apple’s security-release history dates iOS 18.1.1 to November 19, 2024, and lists it for iPhone XS and later.

What users reported
Online discussions around the release include individual reports of battery drain or performance concerns, as well as neutral and favorable experiences. In one Reddit discussion, users used varied language, including “downgrading because of this issue” and “Just saying 18.1.1 completely fix my battery drain.” These are personal accounts, not a measure of how often a problem occurred.

The available sources do not provide a representative survey, a count of Apple support cases, or another reliable prevalence figure. They therefore do not establish that most users had trouble, that iOS 18.1.1 caused every reported symptom, or that “users begging for iOS 17” accurately describes user opinion overall. See the Reddit discussion for the range of individual reactions.
Could users stay on iOS 17 instead?
When iOS 18.1.1 launched, Apple also listed iOS 17.7.2 on November 19, 2024, for compatible devices. That means a user who was still on iOS 17 had a separate update available at the time; it does not mean that someone who had installed iOS 18.1.1 could restore iOS 17. Apple’s release history confirms the parallel releases, but the sources here do not establish current restore or signing status or provide a supported downgrade procedure.

Is iOS 18.1.1 still the latest iOS 18 update?
No. “Latest” applied to the November 2024 moment in the headline, not to the current iOS 18 release list. As accessed October 8, 2026, Apple’s iOS 18 update page lists iOS 18.7.10 above earlier iOS 18 releases and describes it as providing security fixes. Which updates appear for you depends on your iPhone’s eligibility. Check Apple’s iOS 18 update information for the current release context.
