If Windows goes black after you sign in, first check the display connection and output mode, then try resetting the graphics driver. If you can open Task Manager, restart Windows Explorer. A black screen with a cursor, a blank screen after an update, and a blinking cursor before Windows loads point to different problems, so identify what you see before trying recovery options.

Identify which kind of black screen you have

The timing and what remains visible help narrow the next step. Microsoft notes that a cursor on a blank screen can be associated with a stalled Windows process or a driver issue, while a blank screen immediately after sign-in can also involve display-output settings or a user profile. These symptoms alone do not prove a specific cause. See Microsoft’s black-screen troubleshooting guide and its sign-in troubleshooting guide.

  • Blank screen with a cursor: Try opening Task Manager and restarting Windows Explorer first.
  • Blank screen just after signing in: Check display mode and external-display connections. If another account is available, signing in to it can help determine whether the issue is limited to one profile.
  • Blank screen after an update: An incompatible driver or incomplete update may be involved. Safe Mode and Windows Recovery offer ways to troubleshoot the driver or remove a recent update.
  • Blinking cursor before Windows loads: This is a different boot problem; Microsoft says it can indicate that UEFI/BIOS cannot find a boot device.
  • A stop code, error message, or repeated restart: Follow Microsoft’s guidance for stop-code and unexpected-restart errors rather than the plain blank-screen steps below.

Try the quick, low-risk fixes

  1. Check power and display connections. Make sure the PC is plugged in or charged. For an external monitor, confirm that it is powered on, connected, and set to the correct input. Disconnect external displays and peripherals when appropriate. If possible, try a known-good monitor or cable to check whether the connection is the problem.
  2. Reset the graphics driver. Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. A beep or screen flicker may indicate that Windows reset the driver.
  3. Cycle the display output mode. Press Windows+P, press P again, then press Enter. This cycles through modes such as PC screen only, duplicate, and extend.
  4. Restart Windows Explorer if you can reach Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and open Task Manager, or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If Windows Explorer appears, right-click it and select Restart. If it is not listed, choose File > Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter.
  5. Restart the PC. If the sign-in screen offers Update and restart, use it to finish installing pending updates, as described in Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance.

Use Safe Mode to check drivers and startup conditions

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. It can help narrow the cause, but a working desktop in Safe Mode does not by itself identify the exact fault.

If you can reach the sign-in screen

  1. Hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. After the PC restarts, press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

If the screen stays blank before you can reach sign-in

Microsoft’s blank-screen instructions describe forcing Recovery Mode by holding the power button for 10 seconds to shut down, then repeating the forced shutdown two or three times until Recovery Mode appears. From there, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 5 or F5.

In Safe Mode, sign in with the account password; PIN and biometric sign-in are unavailable. To check the graphics driver, right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and choose the relevant adapter. Try Update driver. If the black screen started after a driver update, choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver if that option is available.

Recover from a recent update or system change

If the problem began after a Windows update, Windows Recovery includes an option to uninstall a recent update. Microsoft also recommends considering System Restore when a suitable restore point exists. You can access recovery options from Windows Recovery; the available choices can vary by Windows version and device.

  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

System Restore rolls back system files and settings, not personal files. Reset this PC and reinstalling Windows can have broader effects, including data loss. Back up important files before using a reset or reinstall option, and start with the least disruptive option that fits the problem. Microsoft explains the available choices in its Windows recovery options guide.

When this is not a sign-in desktop problem

A blinking cursor before Windows starts is not the same as a desktop that turns black after a successful sign-in; it can indicate a boot-device problem involving UEFI/BIOS. A stop code or repeated restart also needs its own error-specific troubleshooting. If the PC is managed by work or school and the recovery steps do not resolve the issue, contact your IT administrator.

Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs still work, but after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. This lifecycle change does not, by itself, explain a black screen. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support information.
