Windows Recall is an opt-in feature for compatible Copilot+ PCs that periodically saves screen snapshots and makes their contents searchable. Microsoft documents local storage, encryption, and Windows Hello protections, but those safeguards do not make the archive risk-free: sensitive content can still be captured, and anyone concerned about keeping a searchable history should review Recall’s settings before enabling it.

How Windows Recall works

When you turn on saving, Recall periodically captures snapshots of what is on your screen. It analyzes them on the PC and lets you search for information that appeared on screen, including with natural-language queries. Microsoft Support says: “Recall uses optical character recognition (OCR), local to the PC, to analyze snapshots and facilitate search.” Microsoft says Recall does not record audio or save continuous video. Microsoft Support explains Recall and snapshots.

Recall is available only on compatible Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft’s published minimum requirements are a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, eight logical processors, 256 GB of storage, and at least 50 GB free to enable the feature. These are system requirements, not evidence about privacy or performance in a particular workload. Microsoft Learn lists the requirements and technical details.

What protects Recall snapshots—and what those protections do not establish

Saving is off until a user enables it. Microsoft says snapshots and their associated index are stored locally, encrypted, and not shared with Microsoft. Access is gated through Windows Hello. The documented design uses just-in-time decryption, keys protected by the TPM and tied to the user’s Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security identity, and a Virtualization-based Security Enclave (VBS Enclave). Microsoft also describes the index as containing searchable information and the snapshot store as holding images and metadata such as capture times and window-title strings. Microsoft Learn documents the storage and access design.

Microsoft says its security team conducted design reviews and penetration testing, and that a third-party vendor completed an independent security design review and penetration test. The company has not named that vendor in its security post, so these assessments should be understood as Microsoft’s account of its testing, not as a publicly available independent audit report. Microsoft’s security post describes its approach.

These measures reduce exposure to some threats, but Recall still creates a concentrated, searchable record of what appeared on screen. Encryption and local processing do not remove the consequences of someone gaining access to the authorized device session, nor do they guarantee that every sensitive item will be excluded.

Why the 2024 criticism needs a date and version

The design criticized before Recall’s release is not the same as the later architecture Microsoft documents. In June 2024, WIRED reported findings by Project Zero researcher James Forshaw that access-control protections in a pre-release design could be bypassed without administrator privileges. Microsoft subsequently changed the design. That report is important context, but it should not be treated as proof that the same weakness exists in current Recall versions, or used to describe today’s storage as plaintext. WIRED’s June 2024 report covers the pre-release findings; Project Zero’s write-up details the findings.

Where the safeguards have limits

Sensitive-information filtering can miss content

Microsoft says a sensitive-information filter is on by default and is intended to suppress snapshots when potentially sensitive information is detected. That is a safeguard, not a guarantee. PCWorld’s August 2025 report summarized tests on particular builds and scenarios: some password entry was filtered, while examples including account balances, a file containing a password, and some card information were reportedly captured. Those reported results do not establish what every current build will capture. Do not rely on the filter as the sole protection for information you do not want saved. PCWorld’s August 2025 report describes the tested examples.

Website filters do not erase every trace

Microsoft says website filtering works in supported browsers and primarily applies to the foreground or current tab. Embedded website content, tab titles, or browser history may still appear. Private-browsing filtering also does not prevent a website, browser, employer, or internet provider from knowing that a visit occurred. Microsoft Support describes filtering behavior and its boundaries.

Exported copies leave Recall’s local store

Export is optional; Microsoft’s current support documentation says it applies to devices in the European Economic Area. Sharing an export requires you to give the export code and exported folder to an app or website you choose. Resetting Recall does not erase copies already exported or saved by a recipient. Microsoft Support documents export and reset behavior.

How to control or remove your Recall history

Use Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots. The exact options available can depend on device configuration and administrator policies, particularly on organization-managed PCs.

  1. Stop future snapshots: Turn off Save snapshots. This prevents new snapshots from being saved; it is separate from deleting snapshots already stored.
  2. Pause temporarily: Use the Recall icon in the system tray to pause saving, then check the tray status when you want to confirm whether saving is active.
  3. Limit what is captured: Add apps and supported websites to the filters. Because website filtering has boundaries, check the tray’s status or filter indicator and do not treat filtering as complete concealment.
  4. Limit stored history: Set the storage limit and retention duration to match how much history you want available.
  5. Remove existing history: Delete individual snapshots or batches in Recall settings. Turning off saving alone does not delete what is already saved.

Should you enable Recall?

The decision depends less on a single security label than on what you routinely display and whether the convenience is worth keeping a searchable archive. Consider these questions before opting in:

  • Would finding prior on-screen work save you meaningful time? Recall is designed to find content that appeared on screen, not just files you deliberately saved.
  • How sensitive is your routine screen activity? Consider financial, health, work, identity, and account information that may appear even briefly.
  • How well protected is the device session? The documented access protections rely on Windows Hello and the PC’s security configuration.
  • Are you comfortable with imperfect automated filtering? Reported tests show that sensitive-information filtering can miss some content.
  • Do you want any snapshot retention or export? You can disable saving, use filters and retention controls, or delete history; sharing an export creates a separate copy outside Recall’s local store.

If you do not want a persistent screen history, leave Save snapshots off. If you do use Recall, limit retention, filter where practical, protect access to your Windows session, and treat the sensitive-information filter as fallible. Microsoft’s claim that snapshots remain local is a meaningful part of its design, but it is a company-documented claim rather than independently verified proof that no other risk exists.
