What issues did Microsoft document?
Microsoft’s release notes describe several issues associated with this update or updates released around the same time. The listed fixes are later updates, not substitutes for downloading the expired KB5049981 package.
- Citrix Session Recording Agent 2411: Some devices could download and apply the update, then roll back during restart. Microsoft says Citrix Session Recording Agent version 2503, released April 28, 2025, and later resolves the issue. Home users were not expected to be affected.
- SgrmBroker.exe and Event 7023: Event Viewer could report a System Guard Runtime Monitor Broker service error after updates released January 14, 2025, or later. Microsoft says it is otherwise silent and should not affect performance or functionality.
- USB audio and cameras: Microsoft listed problems affecting some USB audio devices, especially devices using USB 1.0 audio driver-based DACs, and USB cameras that might not be recognized as on. The notes identify KB5050081 as addressing these problems.
- OpenSSH: The notes also mention an existing OpenSSH service startup issue reported after the October 2024 update and identify KB5052077 as its resolution.
For current status and the precise scope of each issue, consult the Microsoft KB5049981 notes.

No. Microsoft states that as of March 31, 2026, KB5049981 is no longer available from the Microsoft Update Catalog or other release channels. A January 2025 article that linked to Catalog downloads documents the package’s original availability; it does not establish that those downloads remain available today.
Do not rely on an unofficial mirror or assume that a similarly named update is interchangeable with KB5049981. Microsoft recommends updating devices to the latest Windows version. For current installation and update options, use Microsoft’s Windows support and update guidance.
Quick Recap
How to check which Windows build is installed
- Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter.
- Check the dialog for the Windows version and OS build. A device updated by KB5049981 would have shown build 19045.5371 on version 22H2 or build 19044.5371 on the LTSC 2021 track.
- If you need updates now, use Windows Update and Microsoft’s current guidance rather than searching for the expired KB5049981 package.
