The exact openings vary by model, so check Apple’s guide for your specific iPhone if you are unsure which grille you are looking at.
Where the two iPhone speakers are
Top: receiver for calls
The narrow receiver area at the top of the display is the earpiece you listen to during a regular phone call held to your ear. Apple calls this opening the receiver in its sound troubleshooting guidance.
Bottom: loudspeaker output
The louder speaker output used for media and speakerphone comes from the bottom speaker area near the charging connector. Apple’s iPhone 16 Repair Manual lists a separate “Bottom Speaker” and “Top Speaker,” confirming that these are distinct components on that model. The manual also identifies a separate main microphone, so not every opening along the bottom edge is a speaker. See Apple’s iPhone 16 Repair Manual for model-specific repair information.
Which holes near the charging port are speakers?
Do not assume that every row of holes near the charging port is a speaker grille: openings may serve different purposes, including microphone pickup, and their arrangement changes between iPhone models. Apple’s written iPhone 17 guide identifies the front camera and USB-C connector but does not label speaker grille locations. For a different design example, Apple’s iPhone SE (2nd generation) guide describes the front camera as being to the left of the speaker near the top bezel. Use the visual or repair guide for your exact model rather than relying on a universal grille pattern.

What to check if your iPhone speaker sounds wrong
If sound is missing or distorted, work through Apple’s basic checks:
- Check settings: Turn off Silent mode and make sure Do Not Disturb is off.
- Remove obstructions: Take off the case or screen protector temporarily and inspect the speaker opening and receiver for dirt or blockage.
- Test the sound: In Settings, drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider. During a call, try speakerphone to help determine whether the issue affects call audio or the bottom loudspeaker output.
- Clean gently if needed: Apple recommends a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for a dirty or blocked opening. Do not poke grille holes with a pin or apply liquid.
Call reception or network conditions can also affect what you hear during a call. If the checks do not resolve the issue, or the sound remains distorted or crackles, contact Apple Support or arrange service; cleaning is not a remedy for a damaged speaker. See Apple’s full troubleshooting steps.
