800Notes is described as a community-sourced phone-number lookup and complaint resource: people can search for reports linked to a number and use other users’ accounts as clues about an unfamiliar call. Those reports are not verified caller identities or official findings of fraud, so treat 800Notes as a starting point for investigation—not proof of who called.
What 800Notes is
A third-party company profile describes 800Notes as a free reverse phone lookup database built from user reports. Academic researchers have also treated 800Notes as a source of self-reported telephony-abuse complaints. In practice, that model can provide context about what other people say they experienced with a number, but it does not establish who was actually calling.
The service is distinct from an official fraud-reporting record or a verified directory. A report is a user’s account, and its presence on a number page does not independently confirm the caller’s identity, intent, or conduct.
How to use a number report
The available sources support the general lookup-and-report model, but do not establish 800Notes’ current interface or exact search and posting steps. If you consult a report associated with a number, use it to guide further checks:

- COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
- IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
- Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
- Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
- Look for context, not a verdict. Read the description of the call and note what the user says happened.
- Compare reports carefully. Check whether accounts describe similar behavior and whether they include useful details such as when the call occurred. Differences may reflect incomplete information or different interpretations.
- Verify important claims independently. If a caller claimed to represent a bank, government agency, or business, contact that organization using a number or channel you find independently—not contact details supplied in the call.
- Keep personal information private. Do not post sensitive details about yourself or someone else in a public report.
Why reports can be wrong or out of date
Self-reported entries can be noisy, conflicting, incomplete, or delayed. In a 2015 NDSS study, researchers examining 800Notes and similar complaint datasets found reports with irrelevant or off-topic content, conflicting interpretations, and missing details. Some entries did not say when the call happened or how many calls occurred; others were submitted days or weeks later. As the paper puts it, “The noisy and conflicting nature of user reports impacts the accuracy of such datasets.” That does not mean every entry is wrong, but it does mean a report should not be treated as conclusive evidence. Read the NDSS paper, Phoneypot: A Large Scale Telephony Honeypot for Exploring Threats in the Telephone Network.
Caller ID can also be spoofed, so the displayed number alone does not prove that the person or organization named in a report made the call. A number may be associated with reports that do not describe the source of a particular call accurately.

Do not confuse Phoneypot figures with 800Notes statistics
Some figures associated with the 2015 Phoneypot paper describe that academic project’s honeypot deployment, not 800Notes. The Phoneypot team reported 39,696 phoneytokens, close to 1.3 million unsolicited calls over seven weeks, and 252,621 unique call sources. None of these numbers represents 800Notes’ database size, users, call volume, or success rate. The paper’s figures refer to the Phoneypot study.
