BD-R is recordable Blu-ray media, BD-RE is rewritable media, BDXL is a higher-capacity family of multi-layer recordable or rewritable discs, and Ultra HD Blu-ray is a read-only movie-disc format. They are different format types, not interchangeable names: check whether your specific drive, recorder, or player supports the format and capacity you plan to use.

How the four Blu-ray labels differ

Format What it means Capacities listed by the Blu-ray Disc Association What to check
BD-R Recordable Blu-ray; intended for writing content to the disc. Standard BD-R: 25 GB or 50 GB. BDXL BD-R: 100 GB or 128 GB. Whether the device supports BD-R and, for BDXL discs, the specific BDXL capacity.
BD-RE Rewritable Blu-ray; intended for recording and reusing the disc. Standard BD-RE: 25 GB or 50 GB. BDXL BD-RE: 100 GB. Whether the device supports BD-RE and the selected capacity.
BDXL A higher-capacity, multi-layer Blu-ray family. It includes recordable BD-R and rewritable BD-RE formats. BDXL BD-R: 100 GB or 128 GB. BDXL BD-RE: 100 GB. Explicit BDXL support; the label “Blu-ray” by itself does not establish it.
Ultra HD Blu-ray Read-only BD-ROM 4.0, used for authored Ultra HD movie discs. 50 GB, 66 GB, or 100 GB. Explicit Ultra HD Blu-ray playback support on the player or drive.

The capacities are format capacities in the Blu-ray Disc Association’s format chart dated December 28, 2017, not a promise of usable file space or current retail availability. The chart lists standard BD-R and BD-RE at 25/50 GB, BDXL BD-R at 100/128 GB, BDXL BD-RE at 100 GB, and Ultra HD Blu-ray ROM 4.0 at 50/66/100 GB. See the Blu-ray Disc Association format-book chart.

BD-R vs. BD-RE: write-once or rewritable

The key difference is recording behavior. BD-R is in the recordable family; BD-RE is in the rewritable family. The Blu-ray Disc Association treats recordable (R), rewritable (RE), and read-only (ROM) as separate format classes. Choose BD-R when you want recordable media, or BD-RE when you need a disc that can be reused. The label alone does not tell you whether a particular device can write to or read that disc; verify support in the device specifications.

What BDXL means

BDXL is a higher-capacity, multi-layer Blu-ray format family, not a synonym for every Blu-ray disc. The Association’s format materials list 100 GB and 128 GB options for BDXL BD-R, and a 100 GB option for BDXL BD-RE. Those capacities distinguish BDXL from the standard 25 GB and 50 GB BD-R/BD-RE entries in the chart. A standard Blu-ray drive should not be assumed to handle BDXL; look for explicit support for the relevant BDXL type and capacity.

Is Ultra HD Blu-ray the same as regular Blu-ray?

No. Ultra HD Blu-ray is read-only BD-ROM 4.0, whereas BD-R and BD-RE are recordable media families. The Association lists Ultra HD Blu-ray capacities of 50 GB, 66 GB, and 100 GB. A player or drive needs support for Ultra HD Blu-ray playback; a generic Blu-ray label does not confirm it. The format overview describes the Association’s format families and is updated August 14, 2020.

Check compatibility before buying or recording

  1. Identify the job. For recording, decide between BD-R and reusable BD-RE. For an authored Ultra HD movie disc, confirm Ultra HD Blu-ray playback support.
  2. Match the capacity and format. If selecting a 100 GB or 128 GB disc, check that the device supports BDXL and that specific media type. For Ultra HD Blu-ray, check support for BD-ROM 4.0 playback.
  3. Check the exact device documentation. Consult the manual or specifications for your model’s supported media families and capacities. The Association’s compatibility and licensing table distinguishes support by specification version and device category, but it is not a universal compatibility list for every consumer product.
  4. Do not assume burned discs will work everywhere. The Association cautions that it cannot assure compatibility or quality for content burned onto BD-R or BD-RE. Test the disc in the intended playback device when reliable playback matters.

These official format pages describe standards and documented capacities, not a current retail catalog or a guarantee that a particular disc or drive is available. Device-specific support remains the deciding factor.
