A USB-C port that will not charge a PC or recognize an accessory may be working as designed: the port, cable, charger, and device must all support the feature and power level you need. First connect the accessory directly, confirm the port’s capabilities, and try the PC’s specified charger and cable. If Windows still does not recognize a device, check its Device Manager status and error code before assuming the port is broken.
Start with the connection and the port’s capabilities
USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guarantee that every port, cable, charger, or accessory supports the same charging power, data speed, USB4, Thunderbolt, or display mode. Some PCs have USB-C ports with different capabilities. Check the PC manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and use the port that supports the function you need. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guide explains the compatibility checks.
- Disconnect the accessory, then reconnect it firmly. Check that the plug seats fully and that the port and connector are free of visible debris.
- For diagnosis, connect the device or charger directly to the PC rather than through a hub or dock.
- Try another appropriate port, cable, or compatible accessory if available. A cable can lack the power capacity or feature support required by the devices.
- Check the PC maker’s specifications for the selected port, the required charging power, and any cable or charger requirements.
If the port is visibly damaged or loose, becomes unusually hot, or continues to fail after these compatibility checks, contact the PC manufacturer or a qualified repair service. Cleaning may help if debris prevents a connection; it will not repair a damaged connector. Microsoft suggests compressed air for cleaning the port.
If the USB-C port will not charge or charges slowly
Confirm the port supports charging
Not every USB-C port on a PC necessarily supports charging. Check the exact model’s documentation to verify that the port you selected accepts power. If the PC charges through USB-C, connect the charger directly to it while troubleshooting.

Match the charger and cable to the PC
Microsoft recommends using the charger and cable supplied with the PC, or confirming the manufacturer’s stated requirements for that model. A charger that is incompatible or underpowered, or a cable that cannot carry the required power, can cause slow charging or prevent charging.
Charging depends on the PC, charger, cable, and port supporting compatible power levels. Microsoft gives a PC requirement of 12 V at 3 A as an example: a 5 V at 3 A source would not provide that example’s fastest charging. That is an illustration, not a universal laptop specification. Microsoft’s separate slow-charging guidance describes USB-C’s baseline case as up to 5 V, 3 A, or 15 W, and notes that USB Power Delivery can support higher power where the connector supports it.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
Choose a replacement only after checking the PC maker’s requirements: the charger and cable must support the PC’s needed power, and the cable must also support any required data, USB4, Thunderbolt, or display feature. There is no universal charger wattage that suits every PC.
Check for debris and bypass docks
Lint or other debris can stop a plug from seating properly. Microsoft suggests using compressed air to clean the port. Also remove any hub or dock from the charging path while diagnosing, since an external hub or dock can contribute to charging problems.

If Windows does not recognize a USB device
A “USB device not recognized” notification does not by itself prove that the physical port is broken. Windows says the device may have reported a problem, or its driver may be at fault. Reconnect the device directly to the PC, try another appropriate port, and then inspect its Device Manager status.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Find the device marked with a yellow warning symbol. Open its properties and read the message under Device status to identify the error code.
- Use Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance for that code. Microsoft’s USB-C page refers users to those steps for error codes other than Code 28; Code 28 means the device’s drivers are not installed.
Use the code to choose the next step rather than treating every recognition failure as the same problem. If Code 28 appears, the issue is specifically that the driver is not installed. For other codes, follow the corresponding Microsoft instructions.

If a dock, display, USB4, or Thunderbolt device has limited functionality
For a device that connects but reports “USB device functionality might be limited,” check feature compatibility across the PC port, cable, and accessory. Connect it directly during diagnosis and use the port documented for the required mode.
USB4 devices and docks
Confirm that the PC supports USB4. Use the cable supplied by the device manufacturer or a certified USB4 cable. Connect the device directly to the PC or through a USB4 dock; an ordinary USB-C-shaped cable or dock does not establish USB4 support.

Displays and alternate modes
DisplayPort, MHL, and other alternate-mode connections require compatible support in the PC, cable, and connected display or adapter. Microsoft says alternate modes work automatically when supported; there is no Windows setting to turn them on. If the mode is unavailable, verify the hardware and cable support rather than searching for a toggle.
If Windows says the device needs more power
A “USB device might need more power” message means the accessory may be drawing more power than the PC can supply in the current setup. Try the following:
- Plug the PC into its charger instead of running on battery.
- Connect the accessory to its own external power source, if it supports one.
- Disconnect unused USB devices to reduce the power drawn from the PC.
If a USB-C audio adapter is unsupported
If Windows reports that the USB-C audio adapter is unsupported, Microsoft recommends a USB-C digital audio adapter. Most PCs support digital rather than analog USB-C audio adapters; a digital adapter includes hardware that converts digital audio for analog headphones or speakers.
What Windows 10 users should know
Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Separately, Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, and it recommends moving to Windows 11.
