There is no single free-space number Microsoft guarantees for every Windows 10-to-Windows 11 upgrade. Microsoft’s general guidance says feature updates typically need 6–11 GB or more, but that is not a fixed Windows 11 upgrade threshold. Check the amount Windows Update or Windows Setup requests on your PC; that prompt is the most relevant figure for your upgrade route.
What Microsoft’s storage figures mean

Microsoft also says a PC needs Windows 10 version 2004 or later to upgrade to Windows 11 through Windows Update. That compatibility requirement does not set an amount of free space.
Why the space needed varies
The space Windows needs depends on the update path and what is installed on the PC, including optional content, languages, and other updates. Windows may use space to download update files, install optional features, and keep the option to remove the update—typically for 10 days.
With ample room, Windows can do more work in the background. On a low-space device, it may use a route that takes longer while the PC is offline, or ask you to free space or use external storage. That is why Microsoft’s general feature-update range should not be treated as a promise for a particular Windows 11 upgrade. Follow the specific space prompt shown by Windows Update or Setup.

Check available space and make room safely
- Check the Windows drive: Open Settings > System > Storage and review available space on the drive where Windows is installed.
- Review cleanup suggestions: In Storage, open Cleanup recommendations. Inspect the categories and files before selecting anything to remove.
- Use Storage Sense if appropriate: Configure it in Settings > System > Storage. Depending on its settings, it can remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin; it works on the system drive.
- Back up important files: Microsoft recommends backing up files and data while preparing for the Windows 11 upgrade. Do this before deleting files or beginning setup.
- Try the upgrade again: Once you have made room, return to Windows Update or Setup and use the amount it requests as your guide.

When an external drive can help
If Windows Update displays Fix issues, Microsoft documents an option to use an external storage device with at least 10 GB free. Back up important files on that device first. Windows may still require more free space on the internal drive, and this workflow is available only when Windows Update offers it; it is not a general workaround for every upgrade.

Microsoft’s upgrade and installation error help gives 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS when addressing certain upgrade errors. Use those figures in that troubleshooting context, not as a universal Windows 10-to-Windows 11 requirement.
