Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen you port a mobile number, you move the number to a new service provider while keeping the same digits. In a U.S. wireless-to-wireless transfer, the new provider submits a request with account-identifying details, the current provider validates it, and the providers coordinate the change. Your old service should remain active until the transfer finishes.
What porting changes—and what it does not
Porting changes which provider serves and routes your number; it does not automatically mean you must buy a new phone. In the United States, customers can generally keep a number when changing providers within the same geographic area, including transfers among wireline, internet-protocol (IP), and wireless services, according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
This article explains the U.S. wireless-to-wireless process first. Procedures and timelines differ by country and by the type of transfer.
What happens during a U.S. wireless-to-wireless port?
1. You request service from the new provider
When you sign up, tell the new provider that you want to keep your existing number. The provider will request information to identify and authorize the account. The FCC’s 2023 order describes commonly used details as your phone number, current account number, five-digit ZIP code, and any customer-assigned passcode. A provider may also require a carrier-specific transfer PIN or other security steps, so follow the instructions for your particular account.

2. The new provider submits the request
The new provider sends the port request through the numbering administrator to your current provider. Your current provider checks the submitted details. Once the request is validated, the providers coordinate the transfer and update the number’s service and network routing so calls and messages can reach you through the new provider.
3. You complete activation with the new provider
Follow the new provider’s activation instructions and wait for confirmation that the port is complete. T-Mobile, for example, advises customers not to cancel the old account before completion and recommends checking that the phone is unlocked and compatible. It also recommends backing up contacts, voicemail, and messages, and says voicemail resets after a completed port. These are T-Mobile’s instructions, not universal requirements.

How long does porting take?
Timing depends on the transfer type and jurisdiction. The FCC consumer FAQ describes an approximately 2.5-hour interval for U.S. wireless-to-wireless transfers as an industry-agreed period; it also says the FCC had not mandated that specific duration. Treat that figure as the FAQ’s guidance, not a guarantee for a particular transfer, and ask your new provider for a current estimate. The same FAQ says wireline-to-wireless transfers can take several days.

| Jurisdiction and source | Credential or process described | Stated timeframe | Interruption guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States, wireless-to-wireless; FCC consumer FAQ, publication date not stated | New provider submits a request using account-identifying details; the current provider validates it. | Approximately 2.5 hours, described as an industry-agreed interval; not an FCC-mandated duration or service guarantee. | Possible transition period; the FAQ warns E911 service may be affected. |
| United Kingdom; Ofcom guidance, 2023 | Request a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) from the current provider and give it to the new provider. | Normally ready within one working day after the new provider receives the PAC. | Not stated in the cited Ofcom guidance. |
| India; TRAI FAQ, year not stated | Request a Unique Porting Code (UPC) by SMS, submit the recipient operator’s forms and KYC documents, then use the new SIM after the scheduled port and verification. | 3 working days within a Licensed Service Area; 5 working days between areas or for corporate numbers; up to 15 working days in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and North East LSAs. | Service interruption during the scheduled change can last up to 4 hours. |
The U.S. timing comes from the FCC’s consumer FAQ, which does not state a publication date. The UK process and timing are in Ofcom’s guidance. India’s process and figures are in the TRAI FAQ; its page does not state a publication year.
Can service be interrupted during a port?
A transition period is possible. The FCC’s consumer FAQ warns that E911 service may be affected during a U.S. transfer: a 911 call should go through, but if it disconnects, an operator may not be able to call back. Ask your new provider how the expected transfer window affects emergency calling, and avoid relying on the port completing at an exact time.

Keeping your number does not establish that your handset will work on the destination network. The FCC notes that phones may be incompatible across providers. Check the new provider’s compatibility and unlocking requirements before you switch; in some cases a different phone or SIM may be needed, but neither is a universal porting requirement.

How to avoid common porting problems
- Keep the old account active until the port completes. T-Mobile explicitly gives this instruction; confirm the process with your own new provider.
- Check the account details before submitting. A mismatch in requested identifying information can prevent validation. Use the account number, ZIP code, passcode, and transfer PIN requested for your account.
- Check device compatibility and unlocking. Confirm that your current phone can be used on the destination network before relying on it for activation.
- Back up information you need. T-Mobile recommends backing up contacts, voicemail, and messages and notes that voicemail resets after a completed port; other providers may handle these differently.
- Ask about the actual transfer window. Provider estimates and national procedures differ, and an older general timeframe is not a service guarantee.
How port-out fraud protections fit into the process
A port-out can redirect calls and texts to a different provider and device, which makes unauthorized transfers a security concern. In a 2023 order, the FCC adopted measures addressing SIM-swap and port-out fraud, including secure authentication and customer notification. The order states: “We also require wireless providers to immediately notify customers whenever a SIM change or port-out request is made on customers’ accounts.”
That statement describes an adopted requirement, but it should not be read as proof that every measure is already in effect for every provider. The displayed text of 47 CFR § 52.37 says compliance with that section is not required until the paragraph is removed or contains a compliance date. T-Mobile separately describes its own Port Out Protection feature; that carrier-specific feature does not establish a universal practice.
Why the process depends on your country
The U.S. account-validation flow, the UK PAC process, and India’s UPC and KYC process are not interchangeable. Required credentials, completion windows, interruption periods, and provider conditions depend on the jurisdiction and transfer type. Before switching, use the instructions from the provider and regulator that apply where your number is registered.
