Yes—you can add Wi‑Fi 7 to an existing PC with a USB adapter. Several manufacturers list Wi‑Fi 7 dongles, but plugging one in does not guarantee every Wi‑Fi 7 feature or 6 GHz connectivity: the adapter, driver, operating system, router or access point, and local spectrum rules all matter.

What you need for Wi‑Fi 7 to work

A USB adapter provides the PC’s wireless hardware; it does not upgrade the rest of the network. For Wi‑Fi 7 features, use a Wi‑Fi 7-capable router or access point and an operating system and driver that support the adapter’s features. TP-Link says feature use depends on access-point and PC operating-system support, and its installation guide tells users to make sure the router or access point supports Wi‑Fi 7.

  • Check the OS before buying. Support differs by adapter and feature. NETGEAR specifies Windows 11 for the Nighthawk A9000 and says Windows 11 is required for its Wi‑Fi 7 features and 6 GHz. TP-Link lists Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) for the Archer TBE6500UH. MSI lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 with limited features for the GUBE65.
  • Check the router or access point. A Wi‑Fi 7 adapter can connect to older Wi‑Fi networks, but Wi‑Fi 7-specific features require compatible network equipment.
  • Check the driver and regional rules. Install the current driver for the exact model and verify whether 6 GHz is permitted and supported where you live. Product compatibility is not the same as country-by-country availability.
  • Check the USB port and placement. Compare the adapter’s USB interface with your PC’s ports. A cable and cradle can help position the adapter away from the back of a desktop, where the case or nearby objects may obstruct reception.

USB Wi‑Fi 7 adapters to compare

These manufacturers list USB Wi‑Fi 7 adapters. The specifications below are manufacturer-published, not independent comparative test results; they do not establish which model is fastest in practice.

Adapter Manufacturer-stated details What to verify
TP-Link Archer TBE6500UH BE6500 tri-band Wi‑Fi 7; USB 3.0; 1.2 m cable and cradle; Windows 10/11 (64-bit). TP-Link lists maximum rates of 2,882 Mbps on 5 GHz, 2,882 Mbps on 6 GHz, and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Confirm current driver support and whether the PC and router support the Wi‑Fi 7 features you want.
NETGEAR Nighthawk A9000 BE6500; USB 3.0 cable and cradle; maximum rates of 2,882 Mbps on 5 GHz, 2,882 Mbps on 6 GHz, and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. NETGEAR says Windows 11 is required for Wi‑Fi 7 features and 6 GHz.
MSI GUBE65 BE6500 tri-band; USB 3.2 Gen 1; two high-gain antennas; Windows 11 and Windows 10 with limited features. Check which features work on your Windows version and in your region.
TP-Link Archer TBE400U Mini USB Wi‑Fi 7 adapter; Windows 10/11 (64-bit) listed. TP-Link’s product page said MLO was still in development on some Wi‑Fi 7 models and would arrive through later driver updates. Check the current driver status rather than assuming the feature is available.
ASUS USB-BE92 Nano Tri-band Wi‑Fi 7 nano USB adapter; Windows 10/11 listed. Verify detailed specifications and driver requirements for the exact regional SKU.
D-Link AE65 BE6500 Wi‑Fi 7 USB adapter; USB 3.0; Windows 10/11 in the North American datasheet. Check the datasheet for your region and confirm feature requirements.

How to choose the right dongle

  1. Start with the operating system. Match the adapter’s stated OS support to the PC, then look for feature-specific conditions such as NETGEAR’s Windows 11 requirement for the A9000’s Wi‑Fi 7 features and 6 GHz.
  2. Match the features you need. If you want 6 GHz or another Wi‑Fi 7 feature, verify support across the adapter, driver, OS, router or access point, and local rules. A Wi‑Fi 7 label alone does not confirm every feature works in your setup.
  3. Check the physical connection. Confirm whether the adapter uses USB 3.0 or USB 3.2 Gen 1 and whether the PC has a suitable port. If positioning is important, compare the included accessories: the TBE6500UH has a 1.2 m cable and cradle, while NETGEAR lists a USB 3.0 cable and cradle.
  4. Look up setup and driver details for the exact model. Manufacturer pages and regional datasheets may differ. Confirm the current driver and any installation instructions before relying on a feature.
  5. Use advertised rates as ceilings, not speed promises. The published figures describe maximum wireless link rates, not guaranteed internet download speeds. TP-Link warns that actual throughput and coverage vary with network conditions, access-point limitations, environmental factors, and access-point placement.

What the speed numbers mean

For the Archer TBE6500UH, TP-Link lists up to 2,882 Mbps on 5 GHz, 2,882 Mbps on 6 GHz, and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. NETGEAR publishes the same maximum band rates for the A9000. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements or predicted download speeds for a particular PC. Real results depend on the wireless link and surrounding conditions, as well as the internet connection itself.
