What is the HPE Gen9 SPP?
SPP means Service Pack for ProLiant. HPE describes it as a collection of firmware, drivers, and system software components tested together and distributed as a single, bootable ISO. Smart Update Manager (SUM) is the deployment tool identified in HPE’s Gen9 release notes. The SPP is software, not a physical product.
HPE’s SPP documentation index places Gen9 in its post-production documentation area. The corresponding release notes describe the package and direct administrators to release-specific materials for compatibility and contents.
How to find the right Gen9 SPP
- Open HPE’s SPP documentation index and select the Gen9 post-production resources.
- Identify the exact SPP release you are considering. Read its release notes for important notes and known issues.
- Check the release’s Server Support Guide for your ProLiant model and its OS Guide for operating-system coverage.
- Review the Contents Report to see which software and firmware versions are included, then consult component release notes for fixes and cautions that apply to the components you plan to update.
- Check the exact download page’s access requirements before attempting to download the ISO.
These are distinct checks: the presence of a component in a package does not by itself establish support for your server and OS combination. HPE identifies the guides and reports above as the references for those questions in its Gen9 SPP release notes.

Does Gen9 SPP download access require entitlement?
Entitlement depends on the release. HPE’s Gen9 release notes say that, from SPP 2021.10.0 onward, Gen9-only SPP releases are separate from Gen10 and Gen10 Plus SPPs, and that Gen9-only versions still require entitlement verification. Confirm the current rules on the specific HPE download page; this version-scoped statement should not be generalized to earlier releases or other product generations. Related HPE repositories are not necessarily the SPP ISO download
HPE’s Software Delivery Repository lists separate Gen9 paths for Linux drivers and agent software (spp-gen9) and firmware updates (fwpp-gen9). It also lists SUM and hexane, an HPE Secure Boot key update package. These repository entries are useful for locating related software, but their presence does not establish that a particular current SPP ISO is available there.

Secure Boot caution for newer HPE Linux drivers
Before installing HPE-published Linux drivers released after December 2020 on a Gen9 system with Secure Boot enabled, check HPE’s key-enrollment requirement. HPE warns that the HPE-DB-2016 key must be in NVRAM for those drivers to load. Its Secure Boot instructions describe manual enrollment through RBSU or use of the hexane package with hexane.sh --flash. Verify the instructions for your specific system before proceeding.
What is not established by the documentation index
The current index and cited release materials do not, on their own, establish the latest downloadable Gen9 SPP ISO, its checksum, a complete current component inventory, or a current model-by-model and OS-by-OS support matrix. Those details can vary by release, so rely on the package page and its associated guides rather than a general claim that a given SPP works for all Gen9 systems. HPE’s current starting point is its SPP documentation index.
