Starlink’s global outage on July 24, 2025, lasted about 2.5 hours. The company’s vice president of engineering attributed it to failures in internal software services that operate the core network. Starlink said service had mostly recovered by 6:23 p.m. ET; public reporting did not identify a more specific technical cause.

When did the Starlink outage happen?

The outage took place on Thursday, July 24, 2025. The reported times mark different stages of the incident, not one exact start and restoration moment for every location.

  • Around 3:20 p.m. ET: Engadget reported that user reports began appearing.
  • Around 4:05 p.m. ET: Starlink acknowledged a network outage and said it was implementing a solution.
  • Around 5:30 p.m. ET: Some customers began seeing service return.
  • By 6:23 p.m. ET: Starlink said the service had mostly recovered, after approximately 2.5 hours.

Reports described disruptions across the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Asia. The available accounts do not provide a complete country-by-country impact map or a verified count of affected subscribers. Engadget’s incident report covered the timeline and reported locations.

What caused the outage?

Starlink vice president of engineering Michael Nicolls attributed the outage to a failure of internal software services that operate the core network. As Datacenter Dynamics reported, Nicolls said: “The outage was due to failure of key internal software services that operate the core network.” He apologized and said Starlink would investigate the root cause.

That explanation points to a provider-side core-network software failure. It does not identify a particular service, software component, or technical trigger. The public accounts reviewed do not establish that a satellite, customer dish, router, software update, or cyberattack caused the incident; nor do they include a detailed post-incident technical analysis.

How many people were affected?

The Guardian reported that Downdetector recorded as many as 61,000 user reports during the outage. That figure counts reports submitted to the tracking service, not verified unique Starlink customers. The reviewed sources do not establish an independently verified total of affected subscribers. The Guardian’s coverage reported the Downdetector figure.

What to check if your Starlink connection is down

A provider-wide outage and a problem at one home can produce similar symptoms. Starlink’s app and support guidance can help distinguish them. The steps below address an individual installation; they cannot fix a provider-side network failure like the one reported in July 2025.

  1. Check for a wider incident. Look at Starlink’s status page and whether outage reports indicate a broad problem. If a provider-wide incident is underway, local equipment checks will not restore the network.
  2. Check the Starlink app for alerts and Event Log entries. Starlink’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using the app. The Event Log can show connectivity or router events, packet loss, and device reboots that affect connection quality without taking the entire service offline.
  3. Inspect power and cabling. Confirm the router has power and cables and connectors are seated. Starlink recommends using official cables to avoid compatibility problems.
  4. Check the dish’s view and conditions. Look for obstructions in the dish’s sky view and consider whether weather could be affecting the connection.
  5. Review Wi-Fi setup. If the Starlink connection appears to be working but devices still have trouble, check the local Wi-Fi setup. Contact Starlink support if the issue persists.
