Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You can reset some Samsung settings without deleting your apps or personal data. A factory data reset is different: it erases data stored on the phone. To keep what matters, back it up first, confirm the backup completed, and make sure you can access the accounts you’ll need to restore your information.
Choose the right kind of reset
If you are troubleshooting a setting or connection, a factory reset may be more destructive than necessary. Samsung offers reset options with different effects. The exact labels vary by model and software version; Samsung notes that “Menu names, settings, and screen layouts may vary depending on the model and software version.”
| Option | What it does | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Reset all settings | Returns device settings to their defaults. | Samsung says this does not erase apps, personal data, accounts, or settings for downloaded apps. |
| Reset mobile network | Resets mobile-network settings. | Does not erase apps or data. Check the phone’s on-screen notice for the specific settings affected. |
| Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Resets Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings. | Does not erase apps or data. You may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks and pair accessories again. |
| Factory data reset | Erases personal data stored on the phone and returns it to initial setup. | Use only when you intend to wipe the device. Unbacked-up local data may not be recoverable. |
For Samsung’s explanations of these options and their effects, see Perform a factory reset on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
Back up what you want to keep
Choose a backup route based on what you need to preserve and where you want to store it. Backup services cover different data and use different restore steps; a completed backup does not guarantee that every app’s private data or every account’s content is included.

Smart Switch: computer or external storage
Samsung’s U.S. support guide describes Smart Switch backups to a Windows PC, Mac, microSD card, or USB flash drive/external storage. For a computer backup, connect the phone with a USB cable, allow access on the phone if prompted, select the data categories in Smart Switch, and start Backup. The guide also documents restoring a supported external-storage backup through Smart Switch.
To restore a computer backup after the reset, connect the phone, open Smart Switch on the computer, select Restore, choose the backup and data categories, and start the restore. Samsung’s U.S. guide lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later as compatible computer systems and says Chromebooks are not compatible. It describes general Smart Switch compatibility for Galaxy phones running Android 4.3 or later; encrypted data transfer requires Android 7.0 or later. These are compatibility details from Samsung’s U.S. support page, so check the page and your model’s support information before relying on a particular route.
See Samsung’s backup and restore guide for its Smart Switch instructions.
Samsung Cloud
On supported devices, Samsung’s UK guide gives this representative backup path: Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data. Select the data you want to back up and tap Back up now. To restore, open Samsung Cloud, choose Restore data, select a backup, and follow the prompts. Samsung’s guide provides different paths for different Android versions; the quoted path is for Android 12 and may not match your phone.
Samsung Cloud requires access to the relevant Samsung account and a network connection. Review the categories offered on your device rather than assuming every kind of content is included.
Google backup
Samsung’s U.S. guide describes this representative path for Google Drive backup: Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data > Back up now. Review the backup details on the phone before starting. Samsung UK notes that backup details may offer a choice about backing up photos and videos to Google Photos, so do not assume that a single backup switch captures every photo or video.

For the Google backup Samsung describes, restoration happens during the Setup Wizard on a new or reset device when you sign in to the Google account used for the backup. Samsung says it cannot be initiated directly from the device’s settings after setup is complete. If you finish setup before selecting the backup, the documented restore opportunity may no longer be available through that flow.
Remote backup or manual copies
Samsung UK says Find My Mobile remote backup requires the phone to have network access, a signed-in Samsung Account, and Find My Mobile enabled. Do not count on this option if those prerequisites are not already in place.
Recommended Free Tools
You can also copy files manually between the phone and a computer or external storage using Samsung’s My Files workflow. Samsung’s U.S. guide documents this method; it does not mean that copying through an arbitrary app will preserve that app’s private data.
Verify your backup and account access
Before erasing anything, check that the backup shows as complete and that you know the passwords for the accounts tied to it. If photos, documents, or other important items are not clearly covered by the chosen backup, verify that they are synced or copy them separately. Keep the phone’s screen-lock credentials available as well.
- Confirm the backup’s completion status and review which data categories it contains.
- Make sure you can sign in to the Samsung or Google account associated with the backup.
- Check that files you need are accessible from the backup destination or another device, where practical.
- If using a microSD card, decrypt it before the reset if it is encrypted. Samsung warns that an encrypted card may not be readable by the phone afterward.
- Keep the device connected to a network if needed to sign out of a Samsung account; Samsung says a network connection may be required to complete that step.
Factory-reset a Samsung phone from Settings
The following is Samsung’s representative Settings route for U.S. Galaxy devices. Labels may differ by model and software version.
- Open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Review the information shown, including what will be erased.
- Tap Reset, then tap Delete all.
- Enter the screen-lock credentials or Samsung account password if prompted.
- Wait for the phone to restart and display initial setup.
Do not interrupt the process once the phone begins resetting. For model-specific directions, use Samsung’s factory-reset support page and the support information for your device.

Account verification after the reset
Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is an anti-theft feature. Samsung says a Google account previously registered on the phone may be required to verify ownership after a factory reset. Its guidance describes FRP as applying when a reset is performed by a method other than the factory-reset option in Settings. On Android 9 and later, the previous screen lock may also be available for verification.
Have the previously registered Google account credentials ready, especially if you plan to reset through recovery buttons or another method outside Settings. If you cannot complete verification, Samsung advises visiting a service center. If stored account credentials prevent you from resetting or setting up the phone, contact Samsung Support. Do not use unofficial FRP-bypass tools.
Restore your data after setup begins
Use the restore path that matches the backup you made. The timing matters: Google backup is selected during initial setup, while Smart Switch and Samsung Cloud have their own restore flows.
- Google backup: During the Setup Wizard, sign in to the Google account used for the backup and select the available backup when prompted.
- Smart Switch computer backup: Connect the phone to the computer, open Smart Switch, choose Restore, select the backup and categories, and begin restoration.
- Smart Switch external-storage backup: Connect or insert the supported storage and follow Smart Switch’s restore prompts.
- Samsung Cloud: Open the Samsung Cloud restore flow, select Restore data, choose the backup, and follow the prompts.
- Manual copies: Copy the saved files back to the phone using the relevant file-management workflow.
After restoring, check important files and apps individually. Some apps may require you to sign in again or restore their own data separately.

If you want to reset without losing data
Use Reset all settings if your goal is to return device settings to their defaults while keeping apps and personal data. For a connection problem, use the relevant mobile-network or Wi-Fi/Bluetooth reset instead, bearing in mind that Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth accessories may need to be set up again. If the phone requires a factory data reset, preserving local information depends on having a usable backup or separate copy before you erase it.
