If spell check is not working in Edge, first open edge://settings/languages and check the Writing assistance setting. Choose Basic for on-device spellchecking or Microsoft Editor for enhanced spelling, grammar, and text predictions. Then test a second website to see whether the issue is limited to one text box.
Check Edge’s Writing assistance setting
- In Edge’s address bar, enter
edge://settings/languagesand press Enter. - Find Writing assistance and select either Basic or Microsoft Editor. Microsoft describes Basic as local spellchecking on your device; it does not send spellcheck data to Microsoft’s cloud. Microsoft’s explanation of Editor and Edge writing assistance covers the available modes.
Basic is the simpler choice if you want spellchecking without cloud processing. Microsoft Editor adds enhanced spelling and grammar checks and text predictions. When Editor is selected, Microsoft says typed text is sent to a cloud service for spelling and grammar processing, is not stored, and is deleted after processing.

Text predictions are separate from spelling and grammar processing. Microsoft says characters and predictions may be cached for up to 30 days when text prediction is enabled; that is not a spellcheck retention period.
Test whether the problem is Edge-wide or site-specific
Try typing a misspelled word in a text box on another website. Microsoft says Editor in Edge runs in text boxes where spellcheck is not already supported by the website. If spellcheck works elsewhere but not in one web app, the issue may be specific to that site’s text field or implementation; this is a useful diagnostic, not a universal explanation for every site-specific failure.

Check writing extensions and organization policies
If you use Microsoft Editor’s extension or another writing extension, verify that it is enabled, updated, compatible with your installed Edge version, and allowed the permissions it needs. Microsoft’s extension troubleshooting guidance recommends checking those items, then disabling and re-enabling the extension if needed.

edge://policyto see whether extensions or related settings are managed by your organization. - If a relevant extension is managed, contact your IT department before changing it.
The Microsoft Editor browser extension is optional. Microsoft describes its free tier as basic spelling and grammar checking, with additional refinements available through a Microsoft 365 account. A paid subscription is not documented as a requirement for Edge’s built-in spellcheck.

Update and restart Edge
- In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Allow Edge to check for and install available updates, then restart the browser if prompted.
- Test spellchecking again. If the menus differ, the installed version shown on the About page can help identify which interface you have.
Microsoft includes updating and restarting among its general steps for resolving Edge problems. Its guidance does not identify these steps as a spellcheck-specific repair. See Microsoft’s general Edge troubleshooting instructions.
Try general browser troubleshooting if spellcheck still fails
If the Writing assistance setting, site test, and extension checks do not resolve the problem, Microsoft’s general Edge troubleshooting guidance also suggests restarting the computer, clearing cached browsing data, and disabling unnecessary extensions. These are general browser fixes; Microsoft does not say that clearing the cache or repairing Edge specifically fixes spellcheck.

Clear cached browsing data
Use Edge’s browsing-data controls to clear cached data, then revisit the affected page and test again. Clearing data can affect browsing state or require sites to reload resources, so it is not the first step to try when spellcheck is missing.
Repair Edge on Windows
- Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair, if that option is available, and follow the prompts.
- Reopen Edge and check the Writing assistance setting again.
Repair may be unavailable when an organization manages the Edge installation.

Do not confuse Windows text suggestions with Edge spellcheck
Windows text suggestions are controlled separately under Settings > Time & language > Typing. The option Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard controls Windows typing suggestions; it does not select Edge’s Basic or Microsoft Editor spellchecking mode. Microsoft’s Windows text-suggestions instructions describe that separate setting.
