To open email links in Gmail on Windows 11, set the Windows MAILTO association to your browser and allow Gmail to handle email links inside that browser. Setting Chrome as the default browser alone may not be enough: these are separate settings.

How the settings work

A link that starts with mailto: asks Windows to open an email handler. Windows chooses which app receives that request; when the chosen app is a browser, the browser must also permit Gmail to handle it. You may need to check both layers.

Set up Gmail in Chrome

  1. Set the Windows association: Open Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for Google Chrome, and select Set default. Google recommends reviewing the file and link types assigned to Chrome. Then find MAILTO in Default apps and make sure its app is Google Chrome. Windows labels can vary by build. Google’s instructions for setting Chrome as the default browser in Windows cover the default-app step.
  2. Allow protocol handlers in Chrome: Enter chrome://settings/handlers in Chrome’s address bar and make sure sites can ask to handle protocols. This navigation is described in community guidance, not the official Chrome default-browser instructions. Chrome Community troubleshooting.
  3. Allow Gmail: Open Gmail in Chrome and sign in to the account you want to use. If Gmail displays a protocol-handler icon or asks to open email links, allow mail.google.com to handle them. Gmail Community instructions.
  4. Check the result: Click a mailto: link. If it opens somewhere other than Gmail, verify the Windows MAILTO association first, then Chrome’s handler permission. This is a suggested check, not a reported test result.

What to check in Edge

The available guidance does not establish Edge’s current menu labels or confirm its Gmail-handler steps, so do not assume Chrome’s settings path applies unchanged. Check Windows Settings > Apps > Default apps for the MAILTO association, then inspect Edge’s current protocol-handler settings and Gmail’s prompt, if shown. Confirm by clicking a mailto: link. If Edge does not offer Gmail as a handler, the exact cause and remedy are not established here.

If Gmail does not open

  • Outlook or another app opens: Check which app Windows assigns to MAILTO. Setting a browser as the general default does not necessarily confirm this specific association.
  • Chrome does not prompt for Gmail: Check whether Chrome allows sites to ask to handle protocols. A prior handler choice may also affect whether a prompt appears; this is community-reported troubleshooting advice.
  • The wrong Gmail account is selected: One Gmail Community user reported difficulty retaining a handler choice while signed into multiple Google accounts. That is an individual report, not evidence of a universal limitation or guaranteed fix. Gmail Community account-selection report.
