Trend Micro Research reported that HolaVPN left traffic unencrypted between users’ computers and its super nodes and exposed users’ IP addresses to websites they visited. Its findings support treating HolaVPN as unsafe for privacy-sensitive use during the period studied—but the report covers an investigation begun in 2017 and data collected from 2017 through 2018, not a current audit.
What flaws did Trend Micro report?
In Illuminating HolaVPN and the Dangers It Poses, Trend Micro Research said traffic traveling from users’ computers to HolaVPN super nodes was not encrypted. It also reported that users’ IP addresses were regularly exposed to the websites they visited. On the basis of those observations, the researchers concluded HolaVPN was unsafe for people seeking to avoid censorship or interception of internet communications.
These are findings from the report’s historical investigation, which began in 2017 and describes traffic collected during 2017–2018. They do not establish how HolaVPN’s current software or network behaves.
How did HolaVPN route traffic in the investigation?
HolaVPN was presented as a community-powered, peer-to-peer service. Trend Micro’s researchers said their analysis did not show the expected peer-to-peer traffic. Instead, they observed traffic routed mainly through roughly 1,000 super nodes in data centers.

The report also described free HolaVPN installations as exit nodes whose bandwidth was monetized through Luminati, a commercial residential proxy network also owned by Hola Networks Ltd. This is the report’s description of the service and network it examined; it should not be taken as confirmation of current ownership terms or network architecture.

What did Trend Micro recommend?
Trend Micro classified HolaVPN as unwanted, high-risk software and recommended that organizations block it on their networks. Its report states: “We recommend all corporations and organizations not to allow HolaVPN in their network.”

Does the report prove HolaVPN is unsafe today?
No. It documents serious privacy and security concerns observed in 2017–2018, but does not verify whether those issues persist or have been addressed. The current client’s behavior, network architecture, ownership terms, and remediation status are not established by the report. A current technical audit or up-to-date official product documentation would be needed to assess the service as it operates now.
