Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows says “The application can’t start because [DLL name] is missing from your computer,” first identify the affected program and the DLL named in the message. A DLL used by one app calls for a different fix than a missing or damaged Windows system file. Try the least disruptive app-level repairs first; use Windows repair commands when the DLL appears to be a Windows component or other system problems are present.
Before you start: identify the app and DLL
Note the exact DLL name and which program displays the error. The message alone does not prove that Windows is missing a core system file. If the DLL appears tied to one application, start with that app’s repair or reinstall options. If it appears to be a Windows component, or you are seeing broader Windows problems, proceed to the system-file repair steps below.
Do not download an individual DLL from an unfamiliar website or copy one from another PC. Use the app publisher’s installer or Windows’ built-in repair tools instead.
1. Restart Windows and try again
Restart the PC, then open the affected program again. Restarting is a basic first troubleshooting step in Microsoft’s program installation and removal guidance. It is quick and low risk, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every missing-DLL error.

2. Repair the affected app
Windows provides a Repair option for some apps. It can fix an app’s installation without requiring you to remove it first; availability and labels depend on the app and Windows version.
Windows 11 apps
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected app and open its menu, then choose Advanced options if shown.
- Select Repair, if available, and try launching the app again.
Windows 10 apps
Look under Settings > Apps > Apps & features for the app’s options. The exact controls vary, and some apps do not offer Repair or Reset. Microsoft’s Windows 10 app repair guidance describes the available flow. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; its current lifecycle status is documented by Microsoft here.

Traditional desktop programs
For some desktop programs, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the program, and look for Change or Repair. The option is not available for every program.
3. Reset the app if Repair is unavailable or did not help
Use Reset only if the affected app offers it and Repair is unavailable or unsuccessful. Reset can remove the app’s local data or settings, so check the publisher’s guidance and back up anything important before proceeding. In Windows, the control may appear beside Repair under the app’s Advanced options; some apps have no reset control at all.

4. Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
Use these built-in Windows commands if the DLL appears to belong to Windows or the PC has wider system symptoms. Run them from an elevated Command Prompt and let each command finish before starting the next.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Wait for it to complete. - Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. Let verification reach 100% before closing the window. - Restart Windows and try the program again.
Microsoft Support says, “You should run DISM prior to running the System File Checker.” Its System File Checker guidance gives the command sequence. DISM and SFC are Windows tools, not separate paid utilities.

5. Reinstall the program from its publisher
If app repair did not resolve the error, uninstall the affected program and reinstall it using the original publisher’s current installer or a trusted store where you obtained it. Follow the publisher’s instructions, particularly for apps that store important local data or require an account or license setup.
For the specific error involving AppVIsvSubsystems32.dll, Microsoft’s instructions apply to Office, not to every program. The Office guidance recommends Quick Repair, then Online Repair, followed by uninstalling and reinstalling Office if repair does not resolve the problem. See Microsoft’s Office-specific instructions; do not apply those steps as a universal fix for other DLL errors.

Consider Windows recovery or reinstallation only when the problem persists alongside broader Windows failures, not as the routine next step for one app that will not start. Microsoft describes recovery choices in its Windows recovery options.
