You can install that current app, which Microsoft says automatically migrates existing notes; if your goal is note recovery, signing in with the account that synced them may also restore them.
Can you still download the old classic Sticky Notes app?
Microsoft Support says, “The previous version of Sticky Notes has been replaced with a Microsoft Store app of the same name.” Its current help directs people to the Store app when Sticky Notes is missing, but the official guidance cited here does not document a supported way to download and reinstall the old classic desktop executable. That does not establish whether every old binary is technically compatible; it means Microsoft’s documented route is the current Store app, not a classic-app installer. Avoid treating third-party executable downloads or repackaged copies as Microsoft-supported.
How to install the current Sticky Notes app on Windows 10
- Open Start and search for Sticky Notes. If the app appears, open it.
- If it is missing from the app list, open Microsoft Store, search for Microsoft Sticky Notes, and install it. This is Microsoft’s documented reinstall route: Microsoft Support: Troubleshoot Sticky Notes.
- In Sticky Notes, open Settings and sign in with the Microsoft account used to sync your notes. Microsoft says the same account is needed to access synced notes across supported apps and devices.
For notes on other devices, Microsoft says OneNote must be installed there and signed in to the same account. Availability can depend on the app and device being used; signing in with a different account will not retrieve notes synced to another one. See Microsoft’s Sticky Notes help.
What happened to your old Sticky Notes?
Installing the replacement app and recovering notes are related, but they are not the same task. Microsoft says, “The new app automatically migrates your existing notes.” If you had signed in and synced notes, sign in to the new app with that same account as well. Migration and sync are Microsoft’s documented paths; they do not guarantee recovery of notes that were deleted or data that is no longer available.
Where did a note go?
Check the Notes list
If Sticky Notes opens with only one note visible, Microsoft advises opening that note’s ellipsis menu and selecting Notes list. A note closed with its X can remain in the list rather than being deleted.
Distinguish closing from deleting
For Sticky Notes version 3.0 and later, clicking X closes a note into the Notes list. Deleting a note is a separate menu action. Microsoft says a deleted note cannot be undone, so check the list before assuming a note is gone and avoid deleting notes you may need.
Keep Sticky Notes accessible
Microsoft says the app cannot currently stay on top of other applications. Pinning it to the taskbar is its documented quick-access workaround.
Protect notes before resetting or uninstalling
Before you reset or uninstall Sticky Notes, confirm whether you are signed in and whether the notes have synced. Microsoft warns that local notes can be deleted if you uninstall or reset while signed out; deleted notes cannot be restored through an undo action. Do not proceed until you have checked the account and secured any available backup.
Can a local legacy database help recover notes?
A Microsoft Learn community Q&A answer describes legacy data locations, but this is community guidance—not a current Microsoft Support recovery guarantee. It may help if you have a preserved Windows installation or local data, but copying a database is not assured to recover every note or work on every later Windows build.
- For Windows 10 version 1511 and earlier, the answer identifies the older
stickynotes.sntdatabase. - For Anniversary Update version 1607 and later, it identifies
plum.sqliteunder%LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalState.
The same answer gives a copy-based backup and restore procedure and mentions a package-folder location under Windows.old for a previous Windows installation. Folder presence, account paths, and recoverability vary. If you investigate this route, close Sticky Notes and preserve a separate copy of the original data before attempting any change. How the current app differs from older releases
Microsoft’s release-history entries provide historical context, not proof of the version installed on a particular PC or current support for the classic desktop executable.
