USB selective suspend lets Windows put an idle USB device or port into a lower-power state while other devices on the same hub remain available. For most people, leave it enabled: Microsoft strongly recommends against disabling it generally. If one particular device has a repeatable problem, turning off the relevant suspend control can be a limited troubleshooting test—not a guaranteed fix.
What is the USB selective suspend setting?
It is a Windows power-management feature. When a connected USB device is idle, Windows and the USB driver stack can request a lower-power state for that device. A hub can suspend one downstream port without suspending every other port attached to it. This is not the same as shutting down the entire USB bus.
The feature is intended to reduce power use, which can be useful on portable computers. Microsoft also notes that preventing devices from suspending can keep the host controller’s transfer schedule active in system memory and interfere with deeper processor sleep states. See Microsoft’s USB Selective Suspend documentation, last updated May 7, 2025.
Should you turn USB selective suspend on or off?
| Choice | What it means | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Enabled | Windows may suspend an idle device or port to conserve power. | The recommended default for general use, especially on a laptop. |
| Disabled | The relevant power-management control no longer allows that suspend behavior. | As a temporary, device-specific diagnostic test when a particular USB device has a repeatable problem. |
Microsoft’s general USB driver guidance says selective suspend is enabled by default and “Microsoft strongly recommends not disabling selective suspend.” Defaults can differ by device category, however: Microsoft’s HID-over-USB guidance says Windows disables selective suspend by default for HID devices to avoid resume latency and provide a consistent user experience. That HID-specific statement should not be treated as a universal default for every USB device.

For WinUSB devices, driver policies and device capabilities affect whether and when selective suspend occurs. The AUTO_SUSPEND policy controls whether a device enters selective suspend, while SUSPEND_DELAY controls how long it must be idle before a suspend request. There is no single setting that forces selective suspend on for every WinUSB device. Microsoft’s WinUSB Power Management documentation, last updated January 17, 2024, describes these policies.
Can selective suspend make USB devices disconnect?
A device-specific interaction with power management is one possibility to investigate when a USB device behaves inconsistently, but the cited Microsoft documentation does not establish selective suspend as a broad cause of disconnects or input problems. Disabling it is therefore a test, not a promised remedy.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
If you try the change, use the narrowest relevant control, then check whether the same symptom recurs under comparable conditions. Keep the change only if the improvement is repeatable and the power-use or responsiveness trade-off is acceptable. If it makes no clear difference, restore the setting and investigate other applicable causes, such as the device, port, cable, driver, or other power controls.
How to find the setting
The exact controls visible on a current Windows PC can depend on its Windows version, device, driver, manufacturer configuration, and power plan. Microsoft’s documented route below comes from a Windows Vista-specific troubleshooting article, so treat its labels as historical guidance rather than verified Windows 10 or Windows 11 instructions.

Power Options route documented for Windows Vista
- Open Power Options and select Change plan settings for the active plan.
- Select Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings, then USB selective suspend setting.
- Choose the relevant enabled or disabled option, apply the change, and check whether the device’s problem changes.
Device Manager route documented for Windows Vista
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Open a USB Root Hub’s Properties, then select the Power Management tab.
- If the relevant power-management control is available, change it only for the diagnostic test and check the result.
These are related but distinct scopes: a power-plan setting and a per-device control are not necessarily interchangeable, and a control may not appear on every PC. Microsoft’s Power management option isn’t selected article explicitly applies to Windows Vista and was last updated February 12, 2026.
What about keyboards, mice, and other HID devices?
Microsoft’s HID-over-USB guidance describes expected behavior for devices designed to support selective suspend: they should retain the first input, touch, movement, or key press when resuming; wake on movement; maintain any wireless link and active status indicators; and resume without perceived delay. These are design expectations, not a guarantee that every keyboard or mouse behaves identically. The same guidance explains that Windows disables selective suspend by default for HID devices to avoid resume latency. See Selective Suspend for HID Over USB Devices, last updated January 11, 2024.

Selective suspend is not USB wake permission
Suspending an idle device and allowing a device to wake the computer are separate power-management behaviors. Microsoft’s WinUSB documentation says the SystemWakeEnabled setting concerns system wake; changing it has no effect on selective suspend.
