If your printer is paused in Windows 11, open its print queue and clear Pause Printing. Also clear Use Printer Offline if it is selected. These are separate settings, and you should check that the queue belongs to the printer you intend to use before changing either one.
Clear Pause Printing in the correct queue
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer, then choose Open print queue. Windows displays its pending print jobs in this window. Microsoft’s Windows 11 printer guidance describes opening the queue from the printer settings page.
- In the queue window, open the Printer menu. If Pause Printing is checked, select it to clear the check mark and resume the queue.
- If Use Printer Offline is checked, select it to clear that setting too. It is separate from pausing and can also prevent printing.
Wait briefly, then check whether the queued job starts. If it remains stuck, continue with the queue and service checks below.
If the printer still will not resume
Cancel a stuck job
In the print queue, inspect pending jobs. Cancel any job that is stuck, then try printing again. Cancelling a job removes it from the queue; submit it again after the printer is ready if you still need that document. See Microsoft’s queue and printer troubleshooting steps.
Restart the Print Spooler
The Print Spooler manages queued print work. Restarting it can clear a temporary service problem without manually removing spool files.

- Search Windows for Services and open the Services app.
- Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Restart.
- Return to the print queue and check whether printing resumes.
Microsoft identifies the spooler’s role and includes restarting it among its printer troubleshooting steps.
Clear spool files only if the issue persists
This later recovery step deletes queued print jobs. Use it only if you are prepared to lose pending jobs and restart or re-submit them afterward.

Check the printer driver
Remove unnecessary, old, or duplicate drivers if they are causing confusion, and install the latest driver for your exact printer model from its manufacturer. Do not choose a driver based only on a similar model name; the right driver and installer depend on the printer. Microsoft’s guidance on updating drivers in Windows can help with the Windows side of the process.
Test whether Wi-Fi is involved
If the printer connects over Wi-Fi, temporarily try a USB or Ethernet connection if the printer supports it. This is a diagnostic check: if a wired connection works, it points toward a network-related issue, but it does not by itself prove why the queue was paused or guarantee a fix. Check your printer’s ports and model documentation before choosing a cable; connector compatibility varies. Microsoft recommends a wired connection as a way to investigate printer connection problems.
