If your Logitech mouse is not responding, start with its power and connection, then test it on another USB port or computer. The right next step depends on whether it is wired, Bluetooth, or connected through a USB receiver; receiver types and pairing instructions are not interchangeable.

Try these 10 checks in order

After each change, move the mouse or click to see whether it responds. If a step does not apply to your mouse—for example, a wired mouse has no battery or wireless receiver—skip it.

  1. Turn the mouse on. Check its power switch and any visible indicator. Indicator behavior varies by model, so consult the model’s support page if you are unsure what a light means.
  2. Replace the batteries or charge the mouse. Use fresh batteries for a model with replaceable batteries, or charge a rechargeable model. Logitech’s power and charging guidance covers these checks.
  3. Try a different USB port. For a wired mouse, unplug and reconnect it to another port on the computer. For a receiver-based mouse, move the receiver to another port.
  4. Connect directly to the computer. Temporarily bypass a USB hub, docking station, KVM switch, or other intermediary. Test the mouse or receiver in a port on the computer itself.
  5. Try a USB 2.0 port, if available. Logitech lists this as a connection check when USB 3.0 is involved. If the computer has no USB 2.0 port, continue with the other checks.
  6. Test the mouse on another computer. If it works there, the problem may be with the original computer or its connection. If it fails there too, the mouse or, for a receiver-based model, the receiver may be involved. This test narrows the possibilities but does not identify the exact faulty component.
  7. Move a wireless mouse closer to its receiver. Keep the mouse near the receiver while testing, and try placing the receiver in a different port if the connection is intermittent.
  8. Reduce possible wireless interference. Move nearby electrical or wireless devices away and test on a non-metal surface. Logitech’s guidance for certain M280, M320, and M275 models recommends keeping other electrical devices at least 8 inches (20 cm) from the mouse and host; treat that distance as model-specific, not a rule for every Logitech mouse.
  9. Identify the receiver and check pairing. Logitech uses several receiver families, including 2.4 GHz, Unifying, and Logi Bolt. Check the receiver’s model number or logo, then follow the pairing instructions for your exact mouse and receiver. Logitech explains identification and pairing in its USB Wireless Receiver guide.
  10. Check USB power settings on Windows, if relevant. Logitech includes USB selective suspend among the possible connection checks. Windows labels and steps can vary by version and power plan, so use current instructions for your Windows version rather than changing unrelated power settings.

For model-specific steps, use Logitech’s mouse connection troubleshooting guide and search Support for the mouse’s exact model number. Logitech’s general connection advice also covers direct USB connections, alternate ports, and testing another computer.

Work out whether the mouse, receiver, or computer is the problem

If it is a wired mouse

Try another direct USB port and another computer. If it fails on both computers, the mouse or its cable may be faulty. If it works on another computer, investigate the original computer’s USB connection or settings.

  • Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.

If it uses a USB receiver

Check whether the receiver is recognized by the computer, connect it directly rather than through a hub, and test another port and—if possible—another computer. On Windows, Logitech recommends checking Device Manager for the receiver. If the receiver remains unrecognized on a second computer, Logitech says the fault is most likely related to the receiver rather than the mouse or keyboard. See Logitech’s receiver recognition troubleshooting.

If it connects over Bluetooth

These USB-receiver checks do not apply to a Bluetooth mouse. Confirm the mouse is on and charged or has fresh batteries, then use the Bluetooth connection instructions for the specific mouse and computer. Logitech’s general connection guide can help identify the applicable connection path.

Choose a replacement receiver carefully

A receiver that fits the USB port is not necessarily compatible with the mouse. Logitech distinguishes receiver families such as 2.4 GHz, Unifying, and Logi Bolt; identify the mouse and receiver by model number or logo and confirm compatibility before obtaining a replacement. Logitech’s receiver guide describes receiver identification and provides a replacement-receiver path.

Do not assume that a generic receiver—or a receiver from another Logitech mouse—will pair with yours. Pairing and compatibility depend on the model and receiver family.

If troubleshooting does not restore the mouse

If the mouse still fails after the relevant checks, compare the cost and effort of a compatible replacement with the importance of preserving your existing setup. When choosing another mouse, check its connection method (wired, Bluetooth, or receiver-based), whether a compatible receiver is included, and whether it uses replaceable batteries or rechargeable power. A new mouse is not guaranteed to resolve a problem caused by the computer’s USB or Bluetooth connection.
