Tea’s July 2025 security incident widened beyond the image dataset the company first disclosed: later reporting said direct messages were also accessible, and Tea acknowledged that some had been accessed. The changing scope matters because Tea was marketed as a dating-safety app, and users shared unusually sensitive information there.

What Tea was—and why the breach mattered

Tea was marketed as a dating-safety and advice app for women. Users could anonymously share dating information and use tools ABC News described as phone lookup, background and criminal-record checks, sex-offender-registry checks, and reverse-image search. That purpose made privacy central to the product: people could use it to discuss dating experiences and assess other people, while also sharing material that could identify them.

ABC News reported on July 25, 2025, that Tea had confirmed a hack. ABC News: “Tea dating advice app confirms hack, says 72K images, including selfies, accessed”.

What Tea initially said was exposed

In its July 25 disclosure, Tea said an attacker accessed a legacy dataset dating from before February 2024. The Associated Press reported the company’s estimate of approximately 72,000 images: around 13,000 verification selfies or identity images, and around 59,000 images from posts, comments, and direct messages.

Associated Press: “Tea, an app for women to safely talk about men they date, has been breached, user IDs exposed”.

How the reported scope changed

On July 29, the Associated Press reported that Tea had acknowledged some direct messages were accessed. The company said the affected system had been taken offline and that it was working to identify affected users; at that point, Tea said it did not know how many messages were exposed.

Separately, TechCrunch reported that security researcher Kasra Rahjerdi found records of more than 1.1 million messages, spanning early 2023 through the week of the July 29 report. That figure describes the researcher’s finding, not a count Tea confirmed as accessed or stolen. TechCrunch also reported that Tea disabled direct messaging after the issue was reported.

Account of the incident What it described What remained uncertain
Tea’s initial disclosure, July 25 A legacy dataset from before February 2024, with approximately 72,000 images, including verification images and images from posts, comments, and DMs. The later disclosure showed this was not the full eventual account of affected data.
Tea’s later acknowledgment, reported by AP July 29 Some direct messages had been accessed; Tea said the affected system was offline and it was identifying affected users. Tea said the number of exposed messages was unknown at that time.
Researcher finding reported by TechCrunch July 29 More than 1.1 million message records, dating from early 2023 through the week of the report. This was not a company-confirmed count of messages accessed or stolen.

Associated Press: “Second security issue discovered on Tea app”. TechCrunch: “Tea app disables DMs after second data breach exposed over a million private messages”.

What users should—and should not—infer

The reports do not establish that every Tea user was affected, nor do they identify which individuals’ information was exposed. The pre-February 2024 date applied to the legacy image dataset; the researcher’s reported message-record period was different. The two figures also measure different things: images Tea said were accessed and message records a researcher said were found.

Tea said it was identifying affected users and would offer those individuals free identity-protection services. The available reporting does not establish whether that offer remains active or whether it was fulfilled for everyone identified. Anyone who believes they may be affected should rely on direct, verified communication from Tea rather than assume exposure based on the public totals.

The broader privacy lesson

The incident illustrates the risk of retaining identity-verification material after the immediate verification need has passed. Mary Ann Miller, vice president of client experience at identity-verification company Prove, told the AP that companies should consider verification methods that do not rely on IDs, retain only essential data, and securely discard verification data that is no longer needed. She also warned that ordinary public-facing information can put people’s safety at risk.

In December 2025 congressional testimony about privacy safeguards for identity and age assurance, Kate Ruane of the Center for Democracy & Technology referred to Tea as an example in a broader policy argument for data minimization, limited retention, security, transparency, and accountability. Her testimony was not a formal committee finding about Tea’s legal liability.
