NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 50 Series is its Blackwell generation of desktop and laptop graphics cards. For desktop cards, NVIDIA lists PCI Express Gen 5 support and GDDR7 memory on six of the seven models—but the RTX 5050 uses GDDR6. Memory capacity and bandwidth vary substantially by model, so “RTX 50” alone does not tell you what a card can do.
What is the GeForce RTX 50 Series?
NVIDIA announced the GeForce RTX 50 Series on January 6, 2025, describing the generation as Blackwell. The series name covers both desktop and laptop GPUs; the model-by-model memory comparison below is for desktop cards. Laptop versions have their own specifications. NVIDIA’s current GeForce RTX 50 Series family page lists seven desktop models, from the flagship RTX 5090 down to the RTX 5050.
At launch, NVIDIA said the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 would arrive January 30, 2025, with the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 starting in February. Those were announced schedule dates, not a guide to present-day stock. The announcement also named add-in card makers including ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, PNY, and ZOTAC, along with PC builders such as Falcon Northwest, Maingear, and Origin PC; that does not confirm current listings or inventory. NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 launch announcement contains the original schedule and partner list.
Does the RTX 50 Series support PCIe 5.0?
Yes. NVIDIA lists PCI Express Gen 5 support for the desktop generation. PCIe is the connection between a graphics card and the rest of the computer; it is separate from the card’s graphics memory. The specification confirms interface support, but by itself does not show a measurable gaming advantage over PCIe 4.0.

For example, NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 specifications identify a PCIe Gen 5 interface. Check the specific card and motherboard specifications when planning a build rather than inferring performance from the interface generation alone.
Does RTX 50 use GDDR7?
Most desktop RTX 50 models use GDDR7, but not all. NVIDIA lists GDDR7 for the RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti, 5070, 5060 Ti, and 5060. The desktop RTX 5050 is the exception: NVIDIA lists it with GDDR6. GDDR7 is the memory type on the graphics card; it is not another name for PCIe Gen 5.

Which RTX 50 desktop cards have GDDR7?
This table reflects NVIDIA’s published desktop family specifications. Bandwidth figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
| Desktop model | Memory | Published bandwidth |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 5090 | 32 GB GDDR7 | 1,792 GB/s |
| GeForce RTX 5080 | 16 GB GDDR7 | 960 GB/s |
| GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | 16 GB GDDR7 | 896 GB/s |
| GeForce RTX 5070 | 12 GB GDDR7 | 672 GB/s |
| GeForce RTX 5060 Ti | 16 GB or 8 GB GDDR7 | 448 GB/s |
| GeForce RTX 5060 | 8 GB GDDR7 | 448 GB/s |
| GeForce RTX 5050 | 8 GB GDDR6 | 320 GB/s |
These values come from NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series family specifications. NVIDIA’s separate RTX 5060 family page and RTX 5070 family page also describe their respective memory configurations and bandwidth.

What do the specifications tell you—and what do they not?
Memory capacity and bandwidth are useful comparison points, but they do not independently establish gaming performance, value, or which card is right for a particular workload. NVIDIA’s launch materials include performance claims and AI throughput figures; these are the manufacturer’s metrics, not independent test results. Any comparison based on NVIDIA’s stated performance multipliers should retain the specified game, resolution, settings, DLSS, and frame-generation conditions.
For scale, NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 launch material describes a 92-billion-transistor GPU and more than 3,352 trillion AI operations per second (TOPS). Those are NVIDIA-reported figures; TOPS is an AI throughput metric, not a gaming frame rate. The RTX 5090 specifications also list 21,760 CUDA cores, a 512-bit memory interface, 32 GB GDDR7, and 1,792 GB/s bandwidth. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 specification page provides the card’s published details.

What should you check before choosing or installing one?
Confirm the exact card and memory configuration
Some model names cover multiple configurations: NVIDIA lists the RTX 5060 Ti with either 16 GB or 8 GB of GDDR7. Verify the specific card’s product specification rather than relying on the family name alone. Also distinguish desktop cards from laptop GPUs, which share the series branding but not necessarily desktop specifications.
Check power and cable requirements for that model
NVIDIA specifies a PCIe Gen 5 power cable rated at 600 W or greater for the RTX 5090. Do not apply that exact requirement to every RTX 50 card: check NVIDIA’s specification page and the board maker’s guidance for the particular model, then confirm the complete system’s power-supply requirements. Use independent testing for performance and value decisions
The official specifications establish memory, bandwidth, and interface support; they do not establish comparative frame rates, temperatures, noise, efficiency, or street value. For those decisions, consult independent tests that compare cards under controlled and clearly stated conditions. Availability and prices also depend on seller and date; the launch announcement is not a current inventory or pricing report.
