That ends Apple hardware service for the model and prevents service providers from ordering parts, but the label itself does not mean the phone stops working or determine whether it receives software updates.
What Apple’s obsolete status means
Apple’s support page, published September 15, 2026, includes “iPhone SE” in its worldwide list of obsolete iPhones. 9to5Mac identified the model added to the list in December 2025 as the first-generation iPhone SE. Apple defines a product as obsolete when it has stopped distributing it for sale for more than seven years. Apple says: “Apple discontinues all hardware service for obsolete products, and service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products.”
This is a hardware-service classification. Apple’s policy does not say that an obsolete iPhone automatically stops functioning, loses network service, or loses software updates. Those are separate questions; the obsolete label alone does not settle them.
How the original iPhone SE reached this point
The original iPhone SE launched in March 2016, and Apple sold it until September 2018, according to MacRumors’ December 2023 report. Apple classified it as vintage that December. On December 1, 2025, 9to5Mac reported that Apple had added the first-generation SE to its obsolete list. Apple’s current support page now lists “iPhone SE” under obsolete iPhones worldwide.

The timing is based on when Apple stopped distributing a product, not when it launched. Apple’s policy sets the vintage period at more than five and less than seven years after distribution ends, and obsolete status at more than seven years.
Vintage versus obsolete
| Status | Time since Apple stopped distributing the product | Apple hardware service and parts |
|---|---|---|
| Vintage | More than five and less than seven years | Service may be possible if parts are available. |
| Obsolete | More than seven years | Apple discontinues hardware service, and service providers cannot order parts. |
These definitions are from Apple’s support policy. Regional laws or material restrictions can also make some service parts unavailable. Apple advises customers to contact an Apple-authorized service channel to confirm service status for a particular product.

What to do if you still use one
If the phone needs repair
Do not expect Apple hardware service or service-provider parts ordering for a model Apple classifies as obsolete. For an individual repair question, contact an Apple-authorized service channel to confirm what applies in your region. The available information does not establish whether a particular independent repair shop can repair the phone, or what a repair would cost.
If you are deciding whether to keep using it
Obsolete status alone does not establish that the phone has stopped working or that software updates have ended. Assess the phone’s actual condition and whether it meets your needs; do not treat Apple’s hardware-service classification as a software-support notice.

If you are considering a used one
Check the generation and ask the seller to confirm the handset’s condition and history. Before buying, verify carrier compatibility, activation status, battery health, the return policy, and the price. These checks are especially relevant when the manufacturer no longer provides hardware service; they are not a guarantee that a listing or device has been independently verified.
