If Windows asks for administrator credentials, enter them to continue.
Open Command Prompt as administrator
- Open Start or select taskbar Search, then type
cmdorCommand Prompt. - On the Command Prompt search result, select Run as administrator.
- When UAC asks whether to allow the app to make changes, select Yes. If Windows instead requests an administrator user name and password, enter credentials for an account with administrator privileges, then select Yes. Microsoft documents this Windows 11 procedure.
Confirm the prompt is elevated
Check the window title for Administrator: Command Prompt before running a command that requires administrator permissions. Opening Command Prompt normally does not request elevation; choosing Run as administrator and approving UAC does.
If Command Prompt opens in Windows Terminal
That can be expected. Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2, Windows Terminal is the default host for console windows, so Command Prompt may appear in a Terminal window rather than the older console window. The host affects how the command-line window is presented; it is not a separate elevation method.
If you specifically prefer the legacy Windows Console Host, Microsoft documents two settings routes:

- Settings: System > Advanced > Terminal.
- Windows Terminal: Settings > Startup > Default terminal application.
Changing the host is optional; it is not required to open an elevated Command Prompt. Microsoft explains the console-host change and these settings.
What the UAC prompt means
User Account Control is designed to help prevent unauthorized changes. When an action requires administrator-level permissions, UAC asks you to approve or deny the change. If Windows requests an administrator user name and password instead of offering a simple approval, use credentials for an account that has administrator privileges; without them, you cannot approve that elevation.
