There is no safe, universal set of steps for overclocking an Android phone. It depends on the exact device, chipset, Android build, and a compatible kernel that explicitly supports frequencies above the phone’s stock limits. Unlocking the bootloader or changing a CPU governor alone does not create that support.
What Android kernel overclocking means
A kernel manages how Android communicates with hardware, including the processor. Overclocking means running the CPU beyond the frequency limits configured for the device. A custom kernel may expose different frequency options, but installing one does not guarantee that it supports an overclock—or that the device can run one reliably.
Android’s CPU frequency scaling uses the Linux CPUFreq subsystem. The available controls depend on the processor, its driver, and the device’s kernel implementation. A governor influences how the system selects operating frequencies within the controls available to it; changing a governor is not, by itself, an overclock.
Why there is no universal procedure
Kernel images and flashing instructions are specific to a device and software build. A kernel for one phone—or even a different Android build for the same phone—may not be compatible. The available documentation does not establish a safe target frequency, a general recovery image, or a tested overclock procedure for an unspecified Android device.

Before considering any modification, verify all of the following for your exact model and build:
- The manufacturer supports bootloader unlocking for that device. A locked bootloader is common; unlocking is possible only on devices that support it. See the Android Open Source Project’s Lock and unlock the bootloader guidance.
- The kernel maintainer explicitly identifies your model, chipset, and Android build as compatible.
- The kernel documentation states whether it exposes frequencies above the stock limit, rather than merely offering governor or frequency controls.
- The maintainer documents thermal and power behavior, ongoing compatibility, and a recovery route for a failed boot.
Do not infer compatibility from a similar model name, shared processor family, or a kernel that merely installs successfully.

What unlocking the bootloader changes
On supported devices, unlocking permits flashing new images or device partitions. It does not itself overclock the phone. Android’s bootloader verifies boot partitions and participates in Verified Boot; implementations and instructions differ between devices. Follow the device maker’s current guidance for the exact model rather than applying commands found for another handset. The AOSP overview is Android bootloader.
Unlocking erases user data as a security measure, and the device may warn you before the process. Back up anything you need before attempting it. AOSP documents this data-erasure requirement in its Verified Boot flow guidance.

Why a governor setting is not an overclock
CPUFreq provides a framework for scaling processor performance, but the CPU driver and hardware determine which frequencies are available. Some kernels expose controls that let privileged software request a frequency; that interface does not prove the processor can safely exceed its stock ceiling. An archived Android-kernel description of a userspace governor is specific to its version and should not be treated as a current, universal method: CPUFreq governors documentation.
Likewise, seeing a frequency-control app or a list of selectable governors does not demonstrate that an overclock is active. The kernel must expose and support the higher frequency for that particular device.

Thermal and power limits matter
Processor frequency is a product-level design decision, not just a performance toggle. AOSP’s boot-time guidance frames the maximum frequency around what is safe for the system-on-chip or product, taking thermal and power concerns into account: Kernel power management. That guidance does not provide a safe overclock target or promise a performance gain beyond stock settings.
Without model-specific testing and documentation, there is no sound basis to predict whether an overclock will improve a particular task, increase heat or power use, or cause instability. Do not push a device beyond its tested limits based on a frequency number from another phone.

A safer decision path
- Identify the exact device and software. Record the full model number, chipset, and Android build. Do not proceed using instructions for a related model.
- Check unlock eligibility. Confirm that the manufacturer supports unlocking for that model and read its current instructions. If unlocking is unsupported, do not assume a custom kernel can be flashed.
- Back up first. Bootloader unlocking can erase user data; make and verify a backup before any unlock attempt.
- Read the kernel maintainer’s compatibility and recovery instructions. Confirm the precise device and build, whether above-stock frequencies are actually offered, and how to restore a working system if the phone fails to boot.
- Do not treat a governor or app as proof of overclock support. Proceed only if the compatible kernel’s documentation explicitly describes the higher frequencies and their device-specific constraints.
If any of those details is missing, stop rather than adapting a procedure from another model. A model-specific guide should come from the phone maker and the kernel maintainer; general Android documentation cannot establish that a particular handset is compatible.
