Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf OEM unlocking is greyed out, connect the phone to the internet and check the setting again. Android’s fastboot guidance says an unavailable control may also mean the carrier has SIM-locked the device, making bootloader unlocking unavailable. If it remains greyed out, ask the carrier or manufacturer to confirm whether your exact model and sales region support bootloader unlocking. Turning on the control only permits a later unlock; that later operation wipes the phone’s user data.
What the OEM unlocking setting does
OEM unlocking is a control in Android’s Developer options that permits a supported device to proceed with bootloader unlocking. The setting’s name, location, and availability vary by manufacturer and model. It is not the same as a SIM or network unlock, which concerns whether the phone can use another carrier’s service.
Also, enabling OEM unlocking does not unlock the bootloader. A separate, device-supported bootloader operation is required. Android’s bootloader documentation explains that unlocking is a distinct step and triggers a factory data reset.
How to troubleshoot a greyed-out control
- Find the right setting. Open Developer options and look for OEM unlocking. The exact path differs across Android devices; consult the manufacturer’s instructions if you cannot find Developer options or the control.
- Connect to the internet. Android’s fastboot guide advises connecting the device so it can check in when OEM unlocking is unavailable. Restore internet access, then revisit the control.
- Check whether the exact device is eligible. If the option remains unavailable, Android says the phone might be SIM-locked by its carrier and unable to have its bootloader unlocked. Contact the carrier or manufacturer with the exact model, carrier, and country or sales region; ask whether that specific handset has an official bootloader-unlock path.
- Back up before any actual unlock. If the device is eligible and you decide to proceed, save anything you need first. The supported bootloader unlock flow warns the user and performs a factory data reset. Android describes the safeguard this way: “After the user acknowledges the warning, the device should perform a factory data reset to prevent unauthorized data access.”
What each outcome means
| Situation | What to do | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| The phone has not checked in online | Connect to the internet and recheck OEM unlocking. | This is Android’s recommended first check, but it cannot make an ineligible device unlockable. |
| The setting is still greyed out | Ask the carrier or manufacturer to verify unlock eligibility for the precise model and region. | A carrier SIM lock is one possible restriction; the exact cause and policy are device-specific. |
| The device has an official unlock path and you want to use it | Back up data, then follow that device’s official bootloader instructions. | The later unlock is distinct from enabling the setting and wipes user data. |
| The device is not supported for bootloader unlocking | Do not assume a generic workaround exists; seek confirmation from the manufacturer or carrier. | There may be no official unlock path for that handset. |
When a computer or USB cable matters
On supported devices, fastboot uses a host computer connected over USB. A compatible data cable can help with that computer-to-phone step; check that the cable carries data and that its connectors match the phone and computer. It will not remove a carrier or device-policy restriction, enable a greyed-out toggle, or make an unsupported model unlockable.

Workarounds to treat cautiously
There is no universal waiting period or reset workaround established for this issue. The official Android guidance cited here does not establish that waiting a fixed number of days, removing the SIM, repeatedly factory-resetting, or changing accounts will resolve the greyed-out control on every device.
Do not factory-reset the phone just to experiment with the toggle. A reset can interact with account-protection features, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure you retain the account credentials needed to set the phone up again. The data wipe is part of the supported bootloader-unlock process itself, not a guaranteed fix for eligibility restrictions.
